good memories, if it was raining monopoly,old maid~ bet my mom burned at least 20 decks because of arguments
we also laughed till we cried arranging our cards so someone would draw the old maid.. listening to the radio,reading comics, but outside was more fun.. we had to be made to come in` i don't ever remember getting bored..

we played hit the can, hide and seek en red rover too, though I dont remember, how we called red rover.
girls used to enjoy themselves playing jumping ropes and the boys also played what we called "pole and bock"
playing soccer on the streets was usual then, because there was not yet too many traffic - it s impossible nowadays.
we had special rules for playing soccer in the street - the goal consisted of two jackets and we had no corner kicks - the
rule was: three corners - pinanty (at that time we did not know penalty was the correct English word)
a "pinanty" was taken at eleven steps from the goal (we called that eleven jaars, for we did not know the word yards either)
Hardly any children played cards, for it was a so-called devil's game, so forbidden.
Somewhere in the attic I still must have my monopoly game from the time streets only cost a few hundred guilders instead of a few hundred thousand euro's.
Playing cowboys and Indians was very popular, and when we did I always wore my blue sombrero, lol
Medieval combats as knights with woorden swords was popular, but you had to look out for some headache after a blow on your head :-)

I was raised in a rural farm setting, most houses were at least a mile apart , but we all had horses so we took night rides, conjuring up visions of being Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, or the Lone Ranger, once at the designated house we did play hide and seek, out in the farm we had a creek over it hung large grape vines , we would swing from these with a Tarzan yell and drop into the water. Catching fireflies and making rings with them or putting them into a jar and pretending them were our signal lights. Fishing was always a great passtime as was a competive game of baseball. Being one of two girls and thirteen boys in the neighborhood , I had to learn to play football and not get killed at the same time. The mothers always managed to have a supply of lemonade and cookies for the group . We would catch locust and tie a thread to them then swing them in the air and listen to the buzzing sound they would make.

Oh, and Roy Rogers was the most famous cowboy in my time too, though we only knew him from the picures, added to a piece of bubble gum, which you could buy for 5 cents in those days (approx. 2 of your cents)

In 1960 my pocket money was raised from 5 to 10 cents, so I could buy Bubble Gum and a bag of salmiak powder as well; sometimes I bought some sweat wood, a kind of a branch from a licorice tree

cards was taboo for us kids to,most everywhere in our area. but mom would let us play

we have a tree here called sassafrass that tastes a lot like licoricewe some times made tea from the root, i think everything from that treee is used and is fragrant..

Playing cards was always an adult entertainment , my parents had guests on Friday or Saturday night to play a game called Canasta, I have chewed many a piece of Bazooka gum and also Double Bubble . I believe it was the bazooka that came as a flat piece of gum with baseball trading cards in the pack. We also had a candy called a fizzie..they were like a sparkling tablet you dropped in water to flavor it or you could put them in your mouth and they would bubble . Alot of my candy was homemade, my Mother even made a fruit strap much like todays fruit roll-ups the kids buy, I have made them in a dehydrator .

By that time hormones began to play up a bit, I guess. LOL

It seems to be very bad for your blood pressure, but oh well, so are naked women :-)

I dearly love salty foods and snacks and they shoot my BP off the charts, I probably would enjoy it , I used to always get extra salt on the rim of a glass of Margarita.

Mays very nice pics, I see trees that resemble what we call a weeping willow, the ones with the long over hanging limbs still green . The pics resemble our bayou country with houses built on the waters edge.

mays at first i thought the white image next to houses was snow, but i figured it was the sidewalk.. it looks like early spring in the pics? is it?

I call them weeping willows too, but on the internet they are being called pollard willows sometimes; maybe that s the same?
