The pawn moves forward one space at a time, but may move forward two spaces if it has not yet moved. It can only attack by moving diagonally forward one space. The pawn can never move backward. The pawn is worth 1 point.
The bishop moves diagonally as many spaces as desired. It is worth three points.
The knight can move horizontally one space, and then vertically two spaces, or horizontally two spaces, and then vertically one space. It is the only piece which can jump over other pieces. The knight is worth three points.
The rook may move horizontally or vertically as many spaces as desired. It is worth five points.
The queen moves horizontally, vertically, or diagonally as many spaces as desired. It is worth nine points
The king can move in any direction, but only one space at a time. You must protect the king at all times. It is illegal to move the king to a space where he may be captured on the next move. If the king is captured, the game is over, so the king is not assigned a point value.

Well, first of all don't allow a three-fold repetition. If you do that will result in a draw.

Other than that, practice, practice, practice, and learn to form a strategy. Try to think at least 8 moves in advance for starters. Then as you get better you will start to see things and work your way up to 12 or more moves in advance, That's the way you play chess. You must think ahead. But some people can't do that as well as others, maybe because they are not capable of it. Most of the time if someone practices chess for years and can't think that far ahead, they don't do very well in chess. It does take practice for most. However, some people are born with the gift of looking ahead. Its a talent to succeed to Master levels.

I am not a chess teacher or do I want to be. I was taught by my uncle how to play chess and he was a state champion. But I have no desire to teach chess online.

I knew about the three fold repetition...

I just seem to get them to move into a draw....even though I have many men left.

SAY HEY TYLER... THINK 8 to 12 moves ahead...you will frighten the life out of SSC

Don't take any notice of that SSC

We can't all be Grand Masters...

I can only think 3 moves ahead ...then brain blanks out.

QUESTION...Why is a Castle called a Rook also... don't even look like a Rook.

AND AND AND Why is the Horse also called a Knight....I don't see any man on it's back.

Rook: borrowed from Persian "rokh", Sanskrit "rath". Formerly the piece was called the castle, tower, marquess, or rector. The old term "castle" is technically incorrect.

Horsey (?): No such thing. In the "Staunton Standard", a Knight is depicted as a horse's head because of it's distinctive shape. In more elaborate renditions of chess pieces, the Knight will usually be a knight on a horse.

Tyler is clearly King

As moderator, SSC is Queen

I cannot be a Bishop since I am an atheist

I hate horses and tricky moves, so Knighthood is not for me.

Since I tend to move straightforwardly and feel fairly powerful at times on a chessboard, I could be a Rook. But I am also slow and small and therefore, would make a good pawn. I will take direction as long as it leads to a good result and I've won many chess games with both pieces.
