In the interest of knowing how members surf around online, what type of Browser do you use the most? (i.e. Internet explorer, Opera, Firefox)

I use "Firefox" exclusively, which is at version "3" now.

Thats called "Spyware" and yes, Internet Explorer is more vulnerable to spyware and viruses than the other browser. But you should run a good spyware program for :real-time' protection with all browser types. But getting off IE will help considerably.

Do you mean "Spybot Search and Destroy"? Thats a good free program for IE mostly, but it doesn't have real-time protection like the other ones do, it immunizes your IE files and protects it that way, but I don't think Spybot will give you real-time protection in the usual way and might not be good enough for Firefox. I would get one you pay a subscription for and get new updates and one that works along with Firefox. I have two spyware program links here in this PC section that are good.

Just read this again, if your talking about your IE's software getting corrupted by other means not related to spyware, like a system crash or something, then that's an entirely different situation altogether.

I just bought this e-machine Tyler and it came with "Spydoctor".I get downloads daily and I think it's registry ID. they scan and auto-remove daily too The freebie is about to run out and I think the subscription is $39.95 and will include real-time protection and clean-up. OK deal? Are three year subs worth it if they're discounted to $70 ? I use IE so far. No probs yet

Yeah Spydoctor is pretty good I've used it before on my old machine. 39.95 sounds like a good deal comparatively speaking from other programs. But if you want to know which program I think is the best for real-time protection it would be "McAfee" http://www.mcafee.com/us/

I've gone thru numerous programs throughout the years and Mcafee keeps more crap off this computer than anything else I've ever used. I have what they call the "McAfee Security Suite", it Detects, blocks, and removes viruses, spyware, adware and rootkits.

Rosco uses McAfee too, so I'm sure he would agree and advise you as I did. But if you're comfortable with Spydoctor I think that price of 39.95 is very competitive, and it's a good program.

yep tyler is correct, when i bought the pc, dell had a special 3 years of macfees for only 40 bucks total, the saleman i was talking to ( i configured online then called a dell salesman) he pointed out 40 bucks for 3 years of mcafee's, was a great price, well it just ran out in december, but since im on aol and cable i get aol as they just went up to 11.95 from 9,95 a month but i like their mail and have friends on it,plus they have phone tech support free, and sometimes u can trick them into helping on some fringe issues, and if cable goes out i have unlimited dial up i can change it to, so i keep it,but anyway aol told me when dell mcafee ran out let aol handle my virus software, , its free, so i called aol tech, and he told me i qualified for the best version and i made him hang with me as i did it and installed it, only thing i changed was i set my firewall to stealth, as i have a sight that will scan ur ports,, i learned about it off the old show on tech tv, " screen savers" i learned alot on that show as ppl called in with problems, Steve Gibson was on it alot , that is who has the sight that will scan ur ports, for open ports, or closed ports, but u want stealth ports, with stealth ur pc will not ping or answer back to pings ,so on the Internet ur invisible, even closed port will let ppl know ur there,if i read his sight correct, so i download the best version premium security suite, i think same as tyler has, and it let u click if u want it to do spyware, and the whole ball of wax, it even caught what it called a potentially unwanted program, U BET when it removed it as i have a log, it had 40 of that program on the pc,,, for some reason i had a rash of not real bad things, but macafees calls them trojans, but i think they were mild ones, but macafees antivirus, will do it all, it got some in a manual scan and some in realtime scanning, like it scans in the background all the time,,it checks ur email and attachment, aol also scans its own mail, i also could get free antivirus that does it all from charter cable free, it claims to be the best, but i was so use to mcafee's i did the aol thing, only difference is it says mcafee's security suite ,,,,from aol. i have a spyware, also its old, its "adware 6 ", i run manualy but it usually only brings back " data miner" which is a cookie, i think, i always delete cookies each nite, , this guy at work got a new pc from a pc place, it had nortons which is good, he went to the sight and let it scan his ports, it came back stealth, then he turned off windows firewall, i have never had mine on, and his still came back stealth so nortons it doing it, ,, ok i will hush, take care...by the way marc, if u read this an emachine is rated very high, i saw somewhere,oh and always do all ur windows critical updates, most are security isssues, take care

Thanks, Roscoe. I'm not gonna get the full McAfee suite since it has 3 features I don't need and a step down is $5 cheaper. The Norton people pissed me off big-time. They intruded every 30 minutes or so with an ad that stopped everything I was doing at the time. The only "mal-ware" I had was THEM! AOL had great mail service but a lot of probs for me elsewhere. Dell does the tech help and warranty back-up for e-machine. I'm very much happier with this than I was with the HP.

i do go on aol first, and check mail on all my names there, i never check charter cable mail hardly ever i hate it, its so hard to get to, but i get off aol to go to tylers, and to news sights and google, i have icons on my desktop for all the places i ususally go, or i open favorites and go to places in it but im not on aol then, just cable isp,, i downloaded a computer check up from aol that said i qualified to get it, but something is wrong, but one nite it did scan, but i cant get to it, it says sign on then it verifies and it says i dont, but when i have time i will call the aol tech that handles that, i think its the same one that helped me out on getting on a sight that had a glitch, he fixed it quick i asked how , he said magic,,,lol,, i dont like to have mac, do the auto scan, i do have it, but i stop it, when i do a dvd burn i use macafees to lockdown the firewall so nothing can interfere with my burn, then i have to unlock it to get online, i have got to when i get offline like about now, and watch tv, i do a manual scan with macafees, i have the sound up so i can here it finish it takes like 45 minutes or more, but when i do that i lockdown the firewall then also, and i dont unlock it till i get on the next day,i dont want it unlocked while it boots, then i unlock it, even thou i have it set to not allow pings during boot up, but i just turned that on a couple weeks ago, when i found it, lol, take care
