rape Case Forces Halliburton Into the Open— But 30 Senators Vote Against It

30 GOP Senators Vote to Defend Gang Rape

alternet.org — A new low, by any account: It is stunning that 30 Republican members of the United States Senate would vote to protect a corporation, in this case Halliburton/KBR, over a woman who was gang raped. The details from Think Progress.. Offering Ms. Jones legal relief was Senator Al Franken of Minnesota who offered an amendment to the 2010 Defense

Jamie-Leigh-Jones-001 "The [anti-rape] legislation passed the Senate with a clear majority but 30 Republican members voted against it, including the former presidential candidate John McCain.

"Among the objections were claims that the government had no business interfering in a private contract between a company and its workers."

"When [Jamie Leigh Jones] awoke the next morning still affected by the drug, she found her body naked and severely bruised, with lacerations to her vagina and anus, blood running down her leg, her breast implants ruptured and her pectoral muscles torn‚ which would later require reconstructive surgery. Upon walking to the rest room, she passed out again," the papers say.

"Jones was treated by a US army doctor who gave forensic evidence to company officials. She says the firm placed her under guard in a shipping container and she was released only after her father asked the US embassy to intervene. (I wonder how he even found out?)

"When the forensic evidence was handed to investigators two years later, crucial photographs and notes were missing.

"Jones says she identified one of the men who attacked her after he confessed, but that Halliburton/KBR prevented her from taking legal action against him or the company by pointing to a clause in her contract requiring disputes to go to arbitration.

"This year, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) proposed an amendment that would deny defense contracts to companies that ask employees to sign away the right to sue. Ya think?

It passed, but it wasn't the slam dunk comic pundit Jon Stewart on the Daily Show expected. Instead the amendment received 30 nay votes all from Republicans.

"I understand we're a divided country, some disagreements on health care. How is ANYONE against this?" Stewart asked.

More from the video clip on Jon Stewart's Daily Show.

Each one of these senators needs to receive a bronze plaque with the following engraved memo: "How To Prevent Rape." Read it all. It's the first list I ever read that has a toehold in reality.

i have posted on this. and have posted the vid of al franken interviewing one of the officials and i think the women, she was terribly abused, the company said she had her day in court, well her day in court as i remember has been 4 years in court to try to have a day in court, so they count her trying to bring this to court as her day in court, they use arbitration, u may have seen my post of franken in the
the committee and he asked tough questions. this girl had to have reconstructive surgery, of course the vote in the senate will be a matter of public record.. when i posted the al franken committee Q and A i did not know what company this was. if i find the vid i posted i will post the url to it here, just goes to show never sign ur legal rights away, i personally hope she can sue them. what she has endured is serious stuff, but she has been able to testify before congress, so maybe something will happen, im not surprised by any of this.

well i hope the women gets her day in court, but dont put so much importance in Haliburton,
seems u are obsessed with that company and it wearing thin, i dont think my 2 senators that were one of the 30 would vote for anything but for a reason, or a principle, some law suits do carry it to far, maybe that was in their mind.to politicize the senators because of the name of the company ,. well we just dont know, frankly im tired of seeing post on Haliburton,
