TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Former Alabama assistant coach and Auburn head coach Pat Dye addressed the media prior to kickoff of Alabama's game against North Texas tonight. Dye, who served as linebackers coach under Bear Bryant, is at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the 40-year reunion of the 1971 Alabama team.
"I don't know how long it's been since I've been over here," Dye said. "My first reaction was just to stay at home and watch it on television, but I got to thinking about it. You know, I haven't been back to Tuscaloosa in, say, 30 years and I'd like to go back and see all those guys I coached in the 60s and 70s."
Members of the 1971 team will be honored in an on-field ceremony shortly before kickoff.
"A lot of these guys I haven't seen in a long time," Dye said. "I'm 71 years old, and I don't know how many more opportunities I will have to come back.
"Once you get that bond, you never lose it. It doesn't make any difference - time, age, whatever."
Dye, who was the head coach at Auburn between 1981 and 1991, also spoke about the Tigers' 38-24 defeat at Clemson earlier today.
"They didn't play much different than they did the first two games," he said. "It's not surprising. We played two tough ball games back to back. You're not going to be at the top of your game every day. This is a young, young football team, and they're going to take their lumps throughout the course of the year."
