Rebecca Carey, Georgia Student, Killed By Dogs She Rescued

A Georgia college student who devoted "countless hours" to abandoned animals was killed by the dogs she rescued, according to several reports.

Rebecca Carey, 23, of Decatur, Ga., suffered multiple bite wounds, police said in news outlets. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote that she had five dogs with her at the time she was found dead in her home -- two pit bulls, a boxer mix and two Presas. They were euthanized.

"Since the second grade when she read the book 'Throw Away Pets,' she vowed to be a voice for all animals," her parents, Greg and Ellen Carey, said in a statement published in the paper. "Upon placing her first abandoned animal in a permanent loving home in 2003, she volunteered countless hours with rescue networks and animal shelters. There she did what she loved the most: rescuing animals from untenable situations to find them safe, loving homes."

Carey attended Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston, Ga. After she didn't show up for work at Alpharetta's Loving Hands Animal Clinic, family members found her body at home Sunday afternoon with several bite marks to her neck and upper torso, reported FoxNews.com.

"[The dogs] never showed any type of aggression, even if one got loose,” neighbor Monica Cofer told Fox 5 TV in Atlanta.

Kim Medlin of DeKalb County Animal Control said in the news segment that he had worked on cases with horrible bites, but this was the county's first fatal incident.

This is really sad, but dog attacks seem to be on the rise again, almost every day it is on the news.
