Food-stamp enrollment hits record 46.7M in June
Published September 05, 2012
FoxNews.com

Food-stamp enrollment climbed to a record 46.7 million people in June, a steadily rising statistic that reflects the trouble millions of Americans have had finding work and paying the bills.

The numbers released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture showed a slight increase from enrollment in May, which was about 46.5 million. And they reflect a marked increase from the time when President Obama took office, when enrollment was at roughly 32 million.

The updated figures come as Democrats convene in Charlotte, N.C., to hold their national convention and nominate Obama to run for a second term. Michelle Obama and other speakers on the program for Tuesday's opening lineup claimed the economy is improving, and urged the country to give the Obama administration more time.

Republicans point to indicators like food-stamp enrollment to make the case conditions have only worsened.

The food-stamp program is an expensive one, with the cost exceeding $6 billion in June. The average monthly benefit per person was $133.

At least one lawmaker, Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, has complained that the government has made an active effort to guide people onto the food stamp rolls regardless of need. The department, though, denies this.

I think the food stamp statistics works in Obama's favor even to the people that don't use it, because I think most people are in favor of the government giving food stamps to people that need it. For those that think people are getting it too easily and its wasting the tax payers money so therefore they are against it, are a minority. There are too many other unnecessary and questionable expenses being made to justify complaining about food stamps that is obviously doing more good than harm.

With the declaration of disaster down here they have opened an emergency Food Stamp program, if you already receive them they automatically add the amount your home is eligible to receive, a family of 4 gets 667.00, 1 person get 200.00 and so on, it is a one time distribution and most is done on line now. I am glad to see they are helping the ones who truly need it, just hope this new system eliminates the fraud that has happened in other years.

Yes I'm glad to hear that too. I do think an effort needs to be made to ensure the people getting FS deserves it and not someone that is too lazy to get a job, but the "must have a job" clause I have never agreed with. I think the people without a job certainly qualify. I don't know enough about the qualifying process to make an accurate judgement call on if they are doing a good job or not.

A note to Gypsy: this is an example of having a discussion, not a copy and paste war, feel free to jump in we'd like to have your input, your words. Food-stamp enrollment hits record 46.7M in June 67629

well of course, let me first say,I am not the only one who copies and paste. beyond that ,I have many thoughts on the subject,in 1979 General Tire was on strike, that was our biggest venue,if it had not been for my gardening and canning, we would have had to go on food stamps,we had six children to feed..Thank God we had just slaughtered a calf, and it was in the freezer... I believe most of our citizens that go on food stamps are honest, I know few may not be.. it is a good program.
I would like to also state,I do give debates with my own words. but sometimes a copy paste is a proof of more than one thought.

I had thought to not reply,I don't need the attacks, and hate. of course I do like the debate. I believe we can be civil, without your bullying and poking fun ,just for fun? I guess I am a glutton..Thanks Tyler for the invite to join.

Tyler , in most cases exempting the elderly and disabled I think it is a good thing to require either work or attending school. It shows the gov. is concerned in people being on the road to being self sufficient and not just drawing food stamps and doing nothing else with their life. Even given the horrible economy and lack of jobs I still see plenty of help wanted signs, if you want to work, there is work to be gotten.
