Built Cage to keep Squirrel out

Photobucket has been changed..now I do not know where I am.

I wish you would take your Tree Rat back, our Neighbour down the road shoots them.

They are classed as Vermin.

I double clicked on photo and it took me to my Photobucket page.

Dam and Blast

The wire cage did not work...

Grey Squirrel bit through the wire got inside and took the top off the bird seed and ate the lot.

We have another method to fool him in the archives ...
It is called the flower pot method for which it is hoped he will get his head stuck in the flower pot.

The new Photobucket I have is a Beta version.
Seems to be better, much larger photo's displayed.
Not explored it properly yet.

Nice picture is that a pic you took? My photobucket changed also to the new beta version but it has an option to switch back to the old version so I did that because the new version didn't have an option to upload from a URL that I could find, you have to upload from your computer, so I stitched back to the old version because it has that option. I told them why I switched back in a little questionnaire that asks you why you are switching back. I liked the new version I just couldn't find a upload by URL option. Although I usually upload from my computer sometimes I find it useful to upload from a URL if I don't need to edit the pic, so that way I don't have to download it to my computer, so the option to upload from a URL has its advantages at times for me.

I have seen stove pipe put on the base of the bird feeder, a squirrel can not climb up it as it is smooth. I am sure they sell it at your local hardware store, it is silver and about 6 inches across. This is an article I found.

Anti-Squirrel Safeguards

.
Squirrels are a notorious nuisance for birds and the people trying to feed them. These rascals have uncanny acrobatic abilities and a seemingly unstoppable determination. Follow these three simple steps to spend less time chasing these persistent pests and more time birding from your backyard.

Exclude them: Squirrels are best excluded by placing feeders on a pole in an open area, at least five feet off the ground and as far as possible from your house and nearby trees; keep in mind that squirrels can jump as far as six feet.

Baffle them: A popular method is to attach a baffle or deterrent to the feeder pole. You can buy special squirrel baffles, or you can attach an inverted sheet metal cone at least 18 inches in diameter. PVC pipe or stovepipe at least 6 inches in diameter and 18 inches long works as well. If your feeder is suspended from a horizontal wire, old record albums, CDs, or plastic soda bottles threaded onto the wire can keep the bushy-tailed rodents from tightrope walking over to it.

Distract them: Why not provide them with their own feeders? Stocked with blends that are especially attractive to squirrels and chipmunks, this will reduce competition for high-priced foods offered at bird feeders. The squirrel feeder to the right has a corn ear holder that once outfitted with an ear of corn, will keep them well fed and busy. Locate squirrel feeders far from bird feeders to avoid them crossing over.

I am not feeding Tree Rats.

Neighbour gives them peanuts in the shells. The Buggers plant them in our garden.
Now we have two peanut trees to dig up.

It was plastic wire on that cage, now we have bought a proper wire cage.

You are right they cannot climb a slippery surface.

Brian would not part with one of his old record Albums.
He has only got 1,000

lol

Seeing these two are 4ft high, they must be Beech trees.

I know Cob Nuts grow on them ...across the road.

But I am sure I have seen peanut saplings growing, cause when I pull them up there is a peanut on the root.

I do not think we grow Peanut bushes here.

Peanuts grow underground and I've grown them before, we used a tractor with a disk to uplift them out of the ground for easy cultivating. Peanuts are a species in the "bean" family.

The United States is the best place to grow just about anything because we have so much land (unlike England) and different climates in each state. You could probably fit 50 England's in the state of Florida alone like a jigsaw puzzle. Built Cage to deter Grey Squirrel 19239

Florida Geography

Total Area - 58,560 Square Miles

Land Area - 54,252 Square Miles

Total Water Area - 4,308 Square Miles

England,

with an area of 130,373 square kilometers (50,337 square miles).

Tyler divide 58,560 by 50,337 and see what you get.

I get 1.1633589

I was going by the maps I've seen, because as the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words".

So I will now illustrate the difference in size of Florida and England.

May I direct your attention to the Maps below, and please note the mathematical size dimensions on the left:

Dimensions:

  • Florida: 630 x 438 Total Square Meter: (58.5289152)

  • England: 150 x 175 Total Square Meter: (13.935456)

I think that satisfactorily proves that Florida is several times larger than England, and I think anyone could reasonably conclude at first glance without doing the math how they could perhaps fit 7 or 8 England's in on that map of Florida. So I will retract my statement of 50 England's and resubmit a new number of "8". Built Cage to deter Grey Squirrel 19239

Hey that's a cool map but its not draggable using firefox, I bet it is on IE thou. I was just pulling your let on the size thingy to FL, but it is interesting looking at that map just how big the US is in comparison. There is so much of the US I havent been to yet, so many states. I've been mostly to all the eastern Unites States and all the way up to Maine, and of course all the southern states. I've been all thru Florida all the way down to Keywest, and I've been as far west as Oklahoma. I would like to go to California next if I could, and all thru the mid west. I've never left the US not even on a cruise ship or to Canada, I never even been on a cruise ship. I have no desire to ever leave the US even if I won an all expense paid vacation I would probably decline, there is too many places here I havent seen yet to warrant leaving the country to visit there land. Quite frankly I'm a little afraid of leaving the US, I feel protected here and safe, and going to another country I'm sure would make me yearn to come back home again. I don't ever plan on leaving the US for any reason whatsoever, everything is here that I want to see or do, and its my home sweet home. smile

I began to realize you were pulling my leg...good spat though.

Yes I was amazed at the sheer size of America on that map.

I only use IE to get to my Home Page...Google Chrome dragged the Country OK

Why Firefox did not I don't know.

Travelling is OK for the young. Need energy, very tiring.

No place like Home they say. You never know what you are going into, in your own place you know what you are up against.

Hospitality can be good or bad. The Brits are blamed for a lot of things.

Don't fancy visiting Northern Ireland ...not the kind of place one would go out of choice.

But Southern Ireland is all right.

Dark and foggy outside here with thick frost on the ground.
-1 ... Brrrr!!

Yeah well, its not the age thing so much as far as I'm concerned about traveling goes, its more about money. Although even if money was no object I probably would never leave the Unites States anyway, but I would certainly go to some places here I haven't been, like California. Oh and yes I would leave the country to go one place, that's Canada. I would love to go there, I could drive my car there. Its just an imaginary line that separates Canada from the US. I don't feel threatened or afraid to go to Canada because they're just like us so there wouldn't be any surprises that way, and they're under our protection militarily. If you mess with Canada you have to contend with us, they're our closest allies. I don't think I will ever live anywhere else other than Florida thou, I lived here all my life I was born and raised here, so its doubtful at my age I will ever live anywhere else.

Ah!

When you got no Opportunity and money, you can't do what you want.

But when you are old and you have extra money you have no get-up and go.
