US government advises computer users to disable Java software

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is advising people to temporarily disable the Java software on their computers to avoid potential hacking attacks.

The recommendation came in an advisory issued late Thursday, following up on concerns raised by computer security experts.

Experts believe hackers have found a flaw in Java's coding that creates an opening for criminal activity and other high-tech mischief.

Java is a widely used technical language that allows computer programmers to write a wide variety of Internet applications and other software programs that can run on just about any computer's operating system.

Oracle Corp. bought Java as part of a $7.3 billion acquisition of the software's creator, Sun Microsystems, in 2010.

Oracle, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., had no immediate comment late Friday.

DISABLE ALL JAVA PLUGINS FOR BROWSERS

There is a 0 day exploit in the wild which can compromise your computer.

Oracle issued a patch for it that was later discovered to be misconfigured so it's useless.

Oracle, the company that bought out Sun a couple of years ago, knew about this problem last August and didn't do anything about it.

In Firefox, it is under "Tools-->Addons-->Plugins"

Just hit the 'disable' button to the right ...Java (TM) Platform SE 7 U 9...

Chrome & IE same way under tools...

THIS IS INFORMATION....I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO DO ANYTHING

As yet I have not done anything until I find out more.

Java plug-ins allow certain programs to run on your computer, but, you can run them just as well without it. At one time Java was a mainstay on computers, but with each successive generation of software the need to have Java has been come less and less. Now the program is pretty much redundant.

Java Script is for your web pages so you should leave that one be. Java on the computer is for programs and is not needed.
