(RNN) - Microsoft has confirmed that a security issue with its web browser Internet Explorer makes it vulnerable to hackers.

About 55 percent of the PC browser market could be affected, Forbes reports. Explorer versions 6 through 11 are vulnerable.

According to Microsoft, the web browser's vulnerability could corrupt memory or allow a hacker to execute code. The attacks have affected some government agencies and businesses.

The company stopped updating and supporting Windows XP a few weeks ago, although many still use the operating system, including the IRS.

The bug gains access to computers when users click on a fake and malicious website.

As of this posting, there is no fix or patch. Many tech websites recommend using another browser.
