Obama: Surge Succeeded Beyond ‘Wildest Dreams’ 090408_obamaoreilly

The troop surge in Iraq has been more successful than anyone could have imagined, Barack Obama conceded Thursday in his first-ever interview on FOX News’ “The O’Reilly Factor.”

As recently as July, the Democratic presidential candidate declined to rate the surge a success, but said it had helped reduce violence in the country. On Thursday, Obama acknowledged the 2007 increase in U.S. troops has benefited the Iraqi people.

“I think that the surge has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated,” Obama said while refusing to retract his initial opposition to the surge. “I’ve already said it’s succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.”

Watch Barack Obama’s interview with Bill O’Reilly at 8 p.m. ET Thursday on FOX News Channel. .

However, he added, the country has not had enough “political reconciliation” and Iraqis still have not taken responsibility for their country.

Speaking on other national security matters, Obama said he would not take military action off the table in dealing with Iran, but diplomacy and sanctions can’t be overlooked.

The Islamic republic is a “major threat” and it would be “unacceptable” for the rogue nation to develop a nuclear weapon, he said.

“It is unacceptable for Iran to possess a nuclear weapon, it would be a game changer,” Obama said. “It’s sufficient to say I would not take military action off the table and that I will never hesitate to use our military force in order to protect the homeland and the United States’ interests.”

But Obama also warned against the current U.S. administration lumping radical Islamic groups together.

“They have fueled a whole host of terrorist organizations,” Obama said of Iran, but “we have to have the ability to distinguish between groups. … They may not all be part and parcel of the same ideology.”

Obama sat down with O’Reilly in York, Pa., after holding a discussion on the economy with voters nearby. The Illinois senator has been campaigning in battleground states since accepting the Democratic presidential nomination last Thursday at his party’s convention in Denver.

Obama said he “absolutely” believes the United States is fighting a War on Terror, with the enemy being, “Al Qaeda, the Taliban, a whole host of networks that are bent on attacking America, who have a distorted ideology, who have perverted the faith of Islam.”

He repeated his campaign’s foreign policy position that Afghanistan must become the “central front” in the War on Terror.

Obama was first asked to come on “The O’Reilly Factor” in early 2007. The interview will air in three more parts after Thursday, from Monday through Wednesday next week.

I am with you Rosco Obama seems to be echoing alot of Pres. Bush...Rather odd he is having so much trouble figuring out which side of the fence he wants to be on, another prime example of his lack of leadership or experiance, if he fails so miserably in one interview and flip-flops so much how can anyone in their right mind trust him to make a life threatening decision for this country and stick to it.

Putting Words in Palin's Mouth

There was a flutter of attention when McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told a group of Post reporters and editors yesterday that his team was having to rework the vice presidential acceptance speech because the original draft, prepared before Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen, was too "masculine." While we all wondered to ourselves what might make a speech masculine or feminine, no one batted an eye at the underlying revelation: that the campaign was writing the nominee's speech before knowing who the nominee would be.

Sarah Palin prepares for her speech tonight. (AP Photo/ABC News)

Never mind the prehistoric days when a politician might be expected to write his or her own words; speechwriters have been around since long before television. But traditionally their job was to channel their bosses' thoughts and ideas into poetry, or at least comprehensible English. Nowadays, apparently it's naive to expect a speech even to reveal something of the essential views or character of the speaker. Instead, campaigns -- not just the McCain campaign -- draft their speeches with an eye to which demographic groups need to receive which messages, and then we in the media rate the speeches based on how well we think they hit those targets.

So when you watch Sarah Palin tonight, expect to learn something about how well she handles a Teleprompter. Expect to learn something about the McCain campaign's assessment of its political standing with women, or working families, or social conservatives. Whether you're learning what Sarah Palin really thinks or feels is anybody's guess.

I think Obama is now starting realize and consider if he REALLY DOES become president the realities that Bush has been facing all along. Now he will be in charge and have to make the tough decisions. Its easy to say what you would do if you arent in that position, much like a back seat driver. It brings to mind the phrase "Be careful what you wish for you might get it".

Since the teleprompter was malfunctioning omitting the top 2 lines on the screen and it is common knowledge politicians have their speeches written for them what is the big deal ? Given these problems she faced and the fact she never skipped a beat , I think she handled it very well, as do the majority of the media giving this issue coverage today.

According to all reports I have been able to read on the computer since I am still limited to 1 TV station via rabbit ears her demeanor and speech were applauded by both parties, did you read Geraldine Ferrara's comments a staunch Dem. and she praised Palin for her presentation, do believe the Dems had better back up and regroup, this by all accounts that I am reading will have a large impact on them.Palin drew nearly as many viewers as Obama did.

macain has nothing to prove to america or to U , he has already proved his grit, that is almost unimaginable, he cant even raise his arms high enough to salute the flag he gave so much to defend, thanks to his poor treatment in hanoi hylton, this man is a man few can even imagine being... i could give a shit how much he says "my friends," if that is all u can say about this man that suffered what many could not endure, i truly feel sorry for u and ur family,,,,

i heard several ppl say they were going to register to vote after hearing sara's speech last nite, one tv comentator, and i may have said this, after her speech, said the way she delivered it is something u dont learn but are born with.,, my daughter called me this afternoon ., saying she likes her because she has problems just like all americans, her dow syndrone child, and her daughters pregnancy, and she handles it with grace, macain will have his hands full to top his vice president, she if he wins may very well be our next president, since i believe maccain will be a one term president at his age,

I think all politicians are good actors..I will state this... our country needs to regain respect, not so much from other countries, but from our own people, whoever can do this doesn't matter what party,, I support them.. first of all bring our people home from war, and treat them with care and love... I still think this was a useless war~ when we should have gone to Iran,Afghanistan, INSTEAD!! I also believe the rich are being favored, and the middle ,(working) class is being diminished, the poor is suffering, these should be top priorities.. and also security for our country..

I don't think so,, he doesn't even realize our economy situtation that is his own words~ that worries me~

In a list of priorties I do believe national security would be number 1, without that we will have a terrorist blowing us to hell and back at their every whim. A down sizing of the military is already planned by the Bush administration, that cannot happen in one day, even Obama is commiting to if need be troops will be deployed, he did admit the surge has been a success even though he did vote against it and he doesn't have the balls to admit he made a mistake in his vote.
If you feel we should be in Iran or Afghanistan then how can you say you oppose war.

true on Balls, and neither does Bush/cheney have the balls to admit their mistakes,, after eight years..

cheny, getting richer on bogus contracts to rebuild iraq, now he wants to rebuild Georgia.. with his companies,??, i guess? no other bids accepted?

I oppose unaccepted war, for self gain, and no reason..we had no business being in Iraq,we should be hunting down bin ladin!! why haven't we?

he is an old friend of senor Bush,as is bin ladin brother who delt in oil with Bush,, a lot of things would maybe be revealed?

let me also state,i don't oppose war,,but if your going go to war, make Damn sure you know what for,, no namby pamby~~or gaining riches!! Kick ass!!

Gypsy you are a Bush basher and you will die one, but have you thought to look around yourself, do you have food, lights, are you comfortable in walking out your door, are you allowed to speak your mind, do you not receive a modest income, is this country not assuring our foreign allies a safe way of life, are we not seeking out and eliminating the terrorists who endanger our very being. You have bitched about war spending , what about the space program, just what does that accomplish or has it done for many years yet billions are funneled into it and you never say a word. You blame Bush , yet the house and senate are dem controlled , they are the ones who vote on spending your money.

The space program is VERY important, it holds our future in the long run, I support it 100%. But I don't want money taken away from things we need to keep us safe and comfortable now, but I do think it should continue to grow and prosper.

no I am not a bush basher, if that is ur defense on the last eight years that is your opinion..

but i am a believer,,for the people, and i don't think the last adminstration, was for the people,,

yes i have food, self grown..

gas i am paying out the ass for wrong decisions by our gov't both parties, someone needs to get off their ass..

a war, that has proven unecessary,, like i said who can give america the best program is who i will vote for,,we will see soon what is real~ I think studying the sex of a fruit fly or anything in that agenda, is stupid..

again a gov't agenda.. going to space whatever, i don't agree with some of that,,

house and senate has just recently gained that privilege **dem** control, maybe with the right prez we can get back the America we all work for..

modest income?? lol

what is the income of an average american? McCain said two hundred fifty thousand??

he is out of touch with reality, that is what will hurt him..

I think he will be a one term president, too. He had a lot of choices, and I think he picked Palin in an attempt to secure the women's vote. It might work. It is possible that we will have the first woman president in 2013.

There are alot of programs spending billions that are ridiculous, and have been funded for 20 years or longer, yet every administration has allowed them to carry on. Obama cannot stay on one track, stand accountable to his voting record, he is only a junior senator, I don't feel he has the experience to make vital decisions , he is rapidly being known for dodging issues that he knows are not good for his image. The fact he has no military background is scary. I wonder why he chose not to join the military ?
