Boy,my computer took me for a wild ride last night. About 8:00, i became aware that I had no sound so I looked into it and found out my computer was saying I had no sound card/program installed. I started digging around and the next thing I knew, I couldn't reach the internet. I called the e-machine # and discovered that software was only warranted for 90 days. So, at $2.95 per minute, we went through the whole restore shebang and it didn't work. $70 down the drain. I did a complete system restore from my hard-drive and lost all my pics, music, vids. But I still had my e-mail at Yahoo. I've been up all night re-linking to favorites like here, banks, etc. It aint over yet,but I was surprised how eassy it was to restore everything except my highly valuable porn.

Wow sorry to hear all of that. I've done a few system restores on my old computer before but I never lost any material. It's only supposed to retore your settings and a few other things that can go wrong in the registry, and it can also sometimes remove programs if they were installed at a time after the restore points you're making the pc revert back to, in other words, if you download a program on Wednesday and you're gonna do a system restore reverting back to Tuesday you might lose it, but not always. But I've never lost any pics or videos or any material like that. I guess shit happens.
Did you get your sound back?

Yeah, I got all functions back. The reason I couldn't use regular restore is because the restore function failed. It kept telling us I had no restore points and it wouldn't let us set up a new on. The drivers were totally whacked. I did a factory setting restore from the internal disc and felt lucky to have that available. My previous HP didn't. Hey, don't be sorry, pal, shit like this happens to me all the time. I've lost 2 MSN receivers and a guitar amp to lightining.

Thanx, SSC. Particularly grievous was the loss of my "Uniformed Japanese Schoolgirl+Large Breasts" collection. I am inconsolable but will be diligent in re-establishing it.SSC wrote:Moon , my deepest sympathy on your porn...

Oh I see, that probably contributed to why you lost that material, doing the regular restore it probably wouldn't have happened, but that's a guess.meemoon wrote:Yeah, I got all functions back. Lost receivers and a guitar amp to lightning? Wow that sounds somewhat familiar, I've lost several TV's and electronics thru the years becuase of power serge's, they weren't properly grounded and I didn't have any surge protection for them, but now most of my important stuff is protected. Florida as you know is the lightning capital of the world, and it certainly lives up to its reputation.

i have been told by dell techs to not do the restore, that sometimes it causes problems , but saying that a couple weeks ago, i for the first time went to mine and it had been closed all this time, and like u i had no restore points, and i could not get it to work, yep i miss the days dell had unlimited tech support, i have it on my old machine, but not this one,, when i had macafees i read it said to keep the restore closed that bad things can get into it and hid, and macafees cant see bad things there.. i have my original XP disk, but i have never broke the plastic its in. i loose garage door opener recievers, to lightning, they are sensitive to that, and u can almost buy a whole garage door opener, for the price of a reciever and the transmitters that come with it... i mean the lightning has to hit a tree in my yard which i have lost trees on 3 storms, the one time i used homeowners on a tree, i found out later it got my stereo reciever, also,

Roscoe wrote: "i have been told by dell techs to not do the restore, that sometimes it causes problems ," // No shit. The Windows restore system failed utterly. I'm sure some Windows nerd could have worked it but how does that help me? My computer didn't come with an XP disc, XP is contained on the hard drive and is compartmentalized. I still had to do an XP recovery 3 times in 72 hours until I got it right.(The 2nd time I did it, IE disappeared somehow) In any case, I think I fixed it now by doing it in stages. "E Machines Empowering Technology" lets you set restore dates/times, so I set one for each stage. It still baffles me why NO MANUFATURER supplies even a basic manual. My previous HP supplied a "booklet" that told you basically how to plug it in. That guy was right when he told you not to use Windows restore. Useless and harmful. Save that disc. I still have my HP, and if I can re-set the heatsink on the CPU, I would like to borrow it (if you will allow me) and re-do it to an XP set-up.

hey i think my disk registration number is registered to this machine and is allowed only on the machine its is originally installed on.. usually machines bought in a store have a restore disk, or in ur case on the hardrive i think u said, but i think dell sends the disk, tyler got his the same way i did, ordered from dell, i think, we both run xp, i once had to format the hardrive, and install windows 95 on a gateway, i had but gateway talked me through it, and i had a bigger hardrive than win 95 recognized, so the machine came with a c and d hardrive, it was partitioned so win 95 could work, so i had to partition it again, but that was decades ago.sure was nice when companies had lifetime tech support, for free, now even though u have to use someone u cant understand, it only last a year on the dell,

That's correct rosco, you shouldn't share your XP disk (or any other windows edition) to someone else to use. Every computer is assigned a disk registration number. If you gave it to someone else to use on a computer that the disk is not assigned to, that would be considered "Software piracy" and could get both party's in trouble.

Well, we wouldn't want Roscoe in the joint making little ones outta big ones. Actually, if I can clean the heat sink base and use new grease to reset it successfully,I'll be satisfied. If I decide to sell it at that time,it would be worth it to buy a new disc.runawayhorses wrote:That's correct rosco, you shouldn't share your XP disk (or any other windows edition) to someone else to use. marc , i think if i remember ur talking about ur hp ??? what was it running win 98, if it had xp or win 98 it should have a restore disc, with it, did u buy it new?? i guess u know this, if u go from 98 to xp it will need more memory, but memory is cheep, the best place i think is crucial.com high quality and low price and explains and even shows what slots to use, in pics on the certain pc, on the old tech tv show said buy from crucial, but i know its good, after saying that i ordered some from dell, lol, but i got it and it had china on it, actually everything inside my dell says china, lol...
