Gingrich at Fundraiser Says Obama’s ‘Already Failed’ (Update1)

By Heidi Przybyla

June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said President Barack Obama’s plan to fix the economy through stimulus spending and government intervention to boost companies like General Motors Corp. has “already failed.”

“Bureaucrats managing companies does not work, politicians dominating the economy does not work,” Gingrich told about 2,000 Republicans who attended a fundraising dinner at the Washington Convention Center last night.

Gingrich was the keynote speaker at the event, which raised $14.5 million for the Republican House and Senate campaign committees as they gear up for the 2010 congressional election. After last year’s vote, Republicans find themselves outnumbered by Democrats in the House 256 to 178 and 59 to 40 in the Senate.

Some Republicans are hailing Gingrich, the leader of the 1994 “Republican Revolution” that brought them congressional majorities, as de facto head of the party at a time when they are looking the path back to political dominance.

In introducing him, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin called Gingrich the “architect of the last reform movement” and “the man of ideas.”

Democrats Respond

The Obama administration didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Ryan Rudominer, said the comments by Gingrich and other Republican speakers at the dinner showed they “would rather bank on failure than work with Democrats.” Congressional Republicans have “no new ideas,” Rudominer, said.

Gingrich was preceded by a series of speakers who also took aim at Democrats and the government bailout of Detroit-based GM, New York-based American International Group Inc. and other companies, as well as the $787 billion economic stimulus legislation passed by the Democrat-controlled Congress in February.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Obama has a “radical agenda.” Republicans have “watched them take over banks, insurance companies, auto companies,” he said, “and now they want to take over your health care.”

“We’re going to need some wins next November to slow down their agenda,” said McConnell. House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio said Democrats are using their control of Congress “to bury our children and the middle class under a mountain of debt.”

Targeting Obama

Actor Jon Voight, the master of ceremonies, opened the evening with a series of sharp attacks on Obama, something many Republican leaders have been hesitant to do in light of the president’s high approval ratings.

A USA Today/Gallup Poll taken May 29-31 gave him a 61 percent approval rating.

“We are becoming a weak nation,” said Voight, calling Obama a “false prophet.” Republicans need to find their way back to power to free the nation from “this Obama oppression,” he said.

McConnell and Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, who followed Voight, seemed pleasantly surprised.

“I’m still just reveling that someone from Hollywood made a speech like that. I hope you’re going to be able to find work after this,” said McConnell. “I really enjoyed that.”

Senator John Cornyn of Texas, among the 150 members of Congress who attended, called the speech “refreshing.”

Alaska Governor and last year’s Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell were among the guests.

Court Nominee

Gingrich dialed back his criticism of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, only saying she is “wrong” on the issue of quotas, without citing any rulings she had made in favor of racial quotas.

After Obama nominated Sotomayor on May 26, Gingrich posted a comment via the Internet saying, “A white man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw.” The statement was criticized by Cornyn and other Senate Republicans.

On June 3, Gingrich took back his description of her as a “racist,” though he continued to highlight her words in a 2001 speech as a “betrayal” of fundamental principles. In the speech, Sotomayor suggested a “wise Latina” would reach “better” decisions than a white male.

Obama nominated Sotomayor, 54, last month to succeed retiring Justice David Souter. If confirmed by the Senate, she would be the first Hispanic to sit on the nation’s highest court. The president said last week that Sotomayor probably “would have restated” her remarks if given the chance and that she was saying that her life experiences would help her understand other people’s struggles.

Democratic strategist Dan Gerstein said Gingrich’s comments and the attack on Obama showed “the double-edged sword” that Gingrich represents for the party.

“The people who generate the most buzz are the most polarizing, divisive and problematic leaders for the Republican Party,” he said. “The worst thing they could do would be to focus on energizing their base and dredge up this hyper- partisan, polarizing politics Obama ran against and won on.”

i think u will be seeing much of these type things, as the congressional elections draw more near, the republicans are searching for some kinda agreement as they are a bit in disarray, with some hard core conservatives and some more moderates in a stuggle . it has been reported newt may run for president, he is a smart man, the contract with america that i think helped win congress back from the dems, was his contract ,. but that was years ago and im fuzzy on it. just will be a alot of politics going on and it will increase, i posted this just for any interest in it. it will be amusing to me anyway to see how the dems and repubs, posture themselves for the mid term elections, the republicans will need to get the center back big time, because the dems seem to have taken over the Hispanics if they can hold on to them, many repubs want ppl like rush limbaugh to hush and think he is damaging the republicans, and scaring the ppl in the center, but there are so many views out there now, just will have to watch the states and see if they change, i dont think mine will at all, as most here are supper conservative, our senators hardly have to campaign they go back in easy.. but newt is smart, and not to be written off, but he has less to work with than the dems at this point, just my view of it all, but i will add, there are things obama must watch out for that may drive the center back to the republicans, one is guns, and he must work with israel, he seems to be ok right now on not being a military wuzz, as i thought he may be, he seems tough enough for now, anyway, i will hush, lol,all this is my opinion and may be totally wrong, we will see,

i also liked romney, and now i kinda wished he had beat out macain in the primary, i think he would have ran a better race, and i also like a strong person who is not a lap dog to congress, but a leader, i dont give newt much of a chance, he stays on some shows to push books and his views, but they all do that, but there are many voices in the republican party now, and lots of different views, they are searching, and mainly hoping to win the mid term elections but that is a big hill to climb, especially in the house of reps,
take care rosco,

well u may have known what i ment so forgive me if u do, what i was talking about was not obama but the Congressional mid term elections, that are not far away, 2010 . clinton lost the congress majority in midterms and never got over it, , when hillary scared ppl about healthcare, she handled it poorly, and republicans see red meat on that issue, on scaring ppl on a government run health care . but some views have changed, but it will be hard, especially paying for it,but now is the best chance for something to pass, i would like some kinda back up incase i loose my job. when i was married there was no problem. but now i would be without anything but cobra and its very expensive, i did it for a few months once ,..

With the prospect of taxing health care in the works , this may come as Obama's first huge black eye..
He has bailed out some very poor investments at a huge burden to taxpayers.. If he wants to maintain his popularity he better find a different way to cover his mounting debt . People will tire quickly of being taxed to death.
This so called helping the middle-man just doesn't seem to be working, middle income is dealing with his stiffest taxes as is lower income, so where is all this help ?

16 billion weatherization plan unveiled at middle class task force meeting

Green jobs include installing solar panels on homes like this one in Newburgh, N.Y. Solar power is still more expensive than fossil fuel, especially now that oil prices have crashed, but President Barack Obama wants to promote renewables as a way to provide domestic jobs, cleaner air and less reliance on imports.

President Barack Obama's task force on middle-class issues began its work Friday with a panel discussion on green jobs — and an announcement that the energy and housing departments would work together to spend $16 billion to weatherize homes and create a green industry for home energy efficiency.

Vice President Joe Biden, who chairs the task force, called the weatherization plan a "historic partnership to create thousands of jobs in the retro-fitting and weatherization industry."

The Energy and Housing and Urban Development departments agreed to coordinate home weatherization spending provided by the $787 economic stimulus bill that Obama signed last week.

HUD said it would put up $4.5 billion to renovate and upgrade public housing. The Energy Department will invest $5 billion in weatherization funds; $3.2 billion for a new Energy and Environment Block Grant that cities and states can use to retrofit homes; and $3.1 billion for a program that states can tap into.

The task force also heard from experts on the potential to create and fill green jobs.

Broadly defined as related to improving the environment, green jobs pay up to 20 percent more than other jobs, are more likely to be union jobs and likelier held by men, less so by minorities and city dwellers, according to a task force staff report released at Friday's meeting in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania. Green jobs also are largely domestic jobs that cannot be shipped overseas.

$11 billion for smart grid
The $787 billion economic stimulus bill Obama signed last week includes billions to help create such jobs as installing solar panels and building wind turbines, which also is part of his goal to nudge the country away from dependence on foreign oil and toward reliance on renewable forms of energy.

Podesta's pitch
Feb. 27: John Podesta, head of the Center for American Progress, talks about rebuilding the middle class through green jobs.

MSNBC
Among the provisions: $11 billion for investments in a smart grid to create more than 3,000 miles of new or modernized high-tech transmission lines; $6 billion for a loan guarantee program to encourage banks to finance green investments; and $500 million for a "green job" training program to be run by the Department of Labor.

It is Obama's belief that such jobs will help raise living standards for middle-class families, who didn't fare well before the current economic downturn set in and are now feeling pinched along with millions of other people who have lost their jobs and homes, and watched retirement and college savings disappear.

Obama announced the panel last month at the White House. Its purpose is to recommend ways to boost the nation's middle class. It also will evaluate new and existing policies to determine whether they are helping or hurting the middle class.

"Quite simply, a strong middle class equals a strong America. We can't have one without the other," Biden said at the time. "It is our charge to get the middle class, the backbone of this country, up and running again."

$2,000 drop in middle-class incomes estimated
Jared Bernstein, the task force's executive director, said middle-class incomes have fallen by about $2,000 in real terms since the start of the decade and that violates a basic American tenet: that you'll get ahead if you work hard and your children will fare even better.

"Part of this election was about recognizing that a key part of any effective government's economic agenda had to be reconnecting the living standards of the middle class to that of the expanding economy once it starts expanding again," said Bernstein — Biden's chief economist and economic policy adviser.

"We are fortunate enough to be here now and we have a responsibility to carry through on that," he said Wednesday.

Labor unions welcomed the administration's focus on the middle class.

Anna Burger, who leads the Change to Win group of seven unions, said the task force shows government understands that rebuilding the American Dream and fixing the economy means "creating good jobs with a wage that can support a family, benefits that can keep them healthy and a secure and dignified retirement."

Solar school
Feb. 9: Don Burns, president of Montcalm Community College, explains how his school retrains workers from a Michigan vacuum plant to make solar panels.

Nightly News
Bill Samuel, the AFL-CIO's director of governmental affairs, said the makeup of the task force increases its visibility, even though the panel is only advisory.

"This is a high-profile task force with someone in charge who is really committed to this and has been throughout his entire career," Samuel said. "So we don't see this as a flash in the pan."

Biden was joined at the meeting by several Cabinet members and others on the task force, including the secretaries of energy, transportation, education, agriculture, and housing and urban development, labor secretary-designate Hilda Solis and Melody Barnes, Obama's domestic policy chief.

That all sounds great for the long range , all those panels and advisory boards , I am sure it will be years till they can make a decision and agree upon it, not my idea of a quick fix, more of a case of pacifying an eager nation expecting the promised turn around.

there is no quick fix, it took years for it to get broken..

It may have been getting broken , but people were still working .Something is not working at all right now. All the stimulus money and big promises are not getting anyone anywhere so far.
I just don't look at mass producing solar panels as the answer to anything.
Gas going up everyday.
Groceries doubling in price.
What is wrong with this picture ???

give it time, it should have been fixed many years ago~at least Obama is trying~ and it is getting better, according to the experts!!..~ the poor leadership is now hitting, for the past mistakes~ it will hit bottom before it comes back~ you can't expect a fix in a few months after years of abuse, and negligence~ we have been over and over this~~ oh well~ It will get better i am positive, i don't think the republicans could have done any better if they had been elected this round~ they had their chance and flubbed it all up~~
