TAMPA — Next year, a giant Confederate flag may tower above the tree line near the junction of Interstate 75 and Interstate 4.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans wants drivers in the Tampa area to see the massive flag — 30 feet high and 50 feet long — atop a 139-foot pole, the highest the Federal Aviation Authority would allow. It would be lit at night.

With the pole already in the ground and building permits in hand, the group is on its way to having what it calls the "world's largest" Confederate flag in place by mid 2009. The group just needs about $30,000 more, said Douglas Dawson, Florida division commander.

Several nearby business owners don't mind. It's history, they say, and it's on private property. Tampa resident Marion Lambert owns the small triangular plot just west of Interstate 75 along U.S. 92 E.

But when Hillsborough County NAACP president Curtis Stokes heard about the plans to have the flag flying next year, he was shocked.

"I'm surprised that they would allow something like this to go on in Hillsborough County," he said.

The county has wrestled with sensitive Confederate issues in the past. In 1994, the Confederate flag was removed from the county seal. Last year, county commissioners recognized Confederate commander Robert E. Lee on the same day they honored a black civic leader. Commissioners later apologized and haven't since recognized Lee.

It's the commissioners' responsibility to make sure plans don't move forward, Stokes said. The flag would send the wrong message about the county and it would be embarrassing because many visitors use the roads, he said.

Code enforcement officers won't be able to stop the project because flags were removed from county sign regulations in 2004. County Commissioner Kevin White, whose district includes the flagpole site, could not be reached for comment Friday.

Plans for the flag, which is part of a memorial for Confederate veterans, started about four years ago, said John W. Adams, a Deltona resident who co-chairs the Confederate Veterans' Flags Across Florida project.

Flags Across Florida started about eight years ago, after the Confederate flag was removed from the Capitol in Tallahassee. So far the group has two major flags erected: one in Suwannee County along Interstate 75 and one in Havana along U.S. 27.

Adams insists the flag isn't about racism or slavery. "It's about honoring our ancestors and about celebrating our heritage," he said. "It's a historical thing to us."

He hopes people who are offended by the flag will drive to the memorial and view the plaques honoring Confederate soldiers. They plan to have one dedicated to black Confederate veterans, he said.

Mitch McDonald, the general manager of a nearby crane rental business, said he won't mind the flag. "The bigger, the better," he said.

But he's worried that it might offend a black employee of his, who was angered by the sighting of a Confederate flag on an earlier assignment.

Ted Meyer, who owns a nearby boat business, said he is concerned customers will think it's his flag because the properties are adjacent. His wife, Maxine Meyer, is upset by the plans. "I've got a lot of black customers," she said.

Dawson, the Sons of Confederate Veterans' Florida commander, said he knows a giant Confederate flag flying 24 hours a day over two of the Tampa area's busiest roads will cause controversy.

"We can't do anything but explain to people what the truth is," said Dawson, of Pensacola. "If they don't want to accept that, they're closed-minded, and Jesus Christ couldn't change it."

OK NOW bama flew the confederate battle flag, like forever, but economics won the day, when mercedes was to choose a state, well of course the germans being sensitive toward things because of the holocaust, to make sure they located here, the legislature voted to take it down, so we did, good move mecedes has been here for years now, and make 2 vehicles i know the suv, but forgot the other one,

lmao no I can't see it, But that was so funny what that one guy said here "Ted Meyer, who owns a nearby boat business, said he is concerned customers will think it's his flag because the properties are adjacent." now I can just see people pointing there finger at each other saying "thats not my flag" I didn't want it here" LOL

I think its opening up a big can of worms, but personally, I could do without it. Its seems a little outdated to be waving the confederate flag around. It seems to me that people who want one they should stick a flag in there own yard for christ sake.

Yes well, obviously I have nothing against the confederate flag in and of itself, but it does carry negative baggage with it that is a controversial issue to some. I'm only suggesting that placing it on the interstate is not the best of ideas. But I don't really care if they do.

if im not mistaken and meemoon can correct me if he sees this, i think south carolina has been having a condederate battle flag issue, like several months ago, i may be wrong, and forgot any detail, it was an issue here since it flew over the capital building forever, but like i said, mecedes , cleared that problem , now like i have stated before we thing volkswagon is coming here to build a plant i hope so. i like civil war places, as i have said before, i like to take battlefield tours, i dont know if im chicken or what, but this was in every battle, but take gettyburg, picketts charge, or any charge, walking into a wall of shot, sometime those round shots 2 would be stuck togethter, so much lead flying they hit each other, and walking when u get close into artillary canister shot, i cant imagine having the courage to walk into a wall of lead.. maybe when ur in that situration something in ur self takes over, i think i would play dead, lol,,seem they fought silly then and the revolution , open field marches into fire. looks like someone would have changed that sooner, i took a drive battle field tour around Richmond Va. it has a small ditch and said they were being fired on and dug with spoons and anything they had. seeing the small ditch real shallow it gave me chill bumps, i bought the movie glory, off ebay, i loved that movie, it ended in meemoons city i think, on the coast, or near it, well take care im rambling,

SC had a flag flying over thje Capitol building and the NAACP started a "boycott SC" drive. They took it down and placed it on a pole in a Civil War memorial. The NAACP continued the boycott but I think they gave up. All this flag crap is silly. If Rev Wright and Pflager can command the respect and affections of a presidential candidate, Floridians can honor that old flag. Who cares?

i agree, like i said the flag was a issue here with blacks in the legislature for years, but it remained, but finally came down to economics like i said, i also agree, obama i dont see how he is fooling so many, he had to know for those 20 years what was going on, and i would bet, he claped and in his heart, he feels like wright.. but he only sees it hurting him so he back away now, after so many years, ok i better go it my only nite to stay up watching tv and sleep in, i worked today and had to get up at 4:30,,later, take care

Here in WV The Confederate Flag is no longer an issue. Several years ago Legislators OUTLAWED the public display of it and, the Cross Bones Flag. If you wish to fly either it must be inside your home and not visible to the outside.

After checking the State's Laws I also find that way back in the late 1800's a law was passed that prohibited the flying of what was worded as "Red or Black" flags.

Right, Robert C. Byrd WAS a member to the KKK many moons ago but denounces them now. I'd have to agree that he brought home the bacon for WV, he's done more for this state than even any of the Govenors have since I've lived here and, people here have shown it by naming buildings, parks freeways and, side streets after him. His current illness may not be life threatening but lest face it, 90? That tough old Byrd ain't got too many more days of flying left in his old body.

yes Moose ., i wish byrd well, most things i write are from memories. tell me if this is correct or not? did he not have a CIA facility built in west virginia?? i know yall w virgins will miss him . will he be up for reelection in the midterm elections in 2 years, or now?. and how do democrates do in west virginia? here in alabama,a few decades ago, u had to be a democrate to win, but all that changed. now only republicans usually win, senator richard shelby changed partys from democrate to a republican, but he does not even have to campaign, he wins by huge margins, thank you for the reply. take care

Rosco, this state is Perdominantly Democrat Most elected officials in the wstate from the state level down to the local are Dems.

Byrds CIA Facility was a cover story for the Greenbrier Hotel Safehouse, which was built for FDR and his cabinet back during WW2 which until about a decade or so ago was "SUPPOSEDLY a secret kept by the feds.

After doing more research on the laws in this state I now understand why most outsiders think of West Virginians are Hicks. I live here, have been here now for a quarter of a century, have met some pretty crazy people and seen some amazingly stupid things here and, I just have to share this little tidbit.

There are two laws here, one Local and one Statewide that though I'm sure have been appealed or revoked are still on the books and apper to be "LEGAL"

1. In the State Laws can be found a law granting men the right to have sex with animals so long as they are 40 lbs. or less.

I've had the disgusting displeasure of meeting a man who favors his Prized Laying Hen over his wife and seen him in action. It was then that I looked up that particular law.

2. Locally, here in Huntington, it is LEGAL for a man to beat his wife under specific guidelines.

a. It must occure on a Sunday Morning
b. It must occure on the Courthouse steps between the hours of 8:00am and 12:00pm

So...... Imagine if you will........

On a warm Sunday Morning in mid May a woman living in the outskirts of Huntington happens upon her husband in the Henhouse moaning with pleasure as he screws his Prize Laying Hen. She storms in, grabs the Hen, wrings its nexk, tosses it aside, which totally pisses off her husband. He then grabs her by the hair on her head, drags her to his pickup and, restrains her in the back. He then drives downtown to the Courthouse, parks his truck, drags her out of the back and marches her up onto the Courthouse Steps and beats her half to death for killing his Hen.

AND HE WALKS AWAY NEVER TO BE CHARGED WITH COMMITING EITHER ACT!!!!

Some very sick people live in a state with some pretty sick laws here. It's no wonder outsiders think of West VIrginians as being HICKS
