that was the marines . i was in the army basic and advance individual training at ft polk LA from may thru sept, in 71, ft polk was i think the main vietnam traning fort, one thing i notice different, the drill sargent, they did the " sir yes sir" the army drill sargents did not let u call them sir since only officers were to be addressed as sir, they got that straight from the start, so the different branches have different rules, but i knew this but thought i would reply , all my training was strickly vietnam, but i was in the national guard so when i got out of active duty army training , i did not go to vietnam but had to stay in the guard for 6 years, but back then they had the draft , so the guard did not get called up to go , like they do now, they just drafted more ppl, if i had not joined i was about to be drafted,,my advance individual training was light weapons , 50 caliber machine gun on down to hand to hand combat, and explosives, like c-4..and claymore mines, and all weapons inbetween, hot place.. matter of fact they have been running a movie on tv, called tiger land which is at ft polk, i went through that, and in that movie it said fort polk, but it was not fort polk they filmed at, the baracks were different in the movie tiger land, oh rather than
sir yes sir ,, the army was Yes Drill Seargent, like on the movie forrest gump,

By the time I turned 18 the Vietnam war was over so
I guess I was part of a lucky generation that didn't have
a war going on. The draft was over so I got lucky there too.
I thought for a brief moment about joining the Navy with a
buddy of mine but that thought quickly passed...
I greatly appreciate all of our past and present service men
and women who have kept and continue to keep our
country free.

well i was in college, and was 2-S on my draft classification, i took a couple of refresher courses in algebra and english, and the councelors said the hours counted, but they did not so i came up short on hour. so later i got classified 1 -A . i was in the draft lottery the second year, my birthdate got number 146 in the draft lottery, the first year they had drafted to 190 something, so i joined the guard, i was lucky, many ppl were getting in the guard, maybe i got in because my unit was mechanized infantry.
anyway, my year they only drafted to number 125 so i would have not even been drafted, but u dont know till the end of the year and i had already joined the guard, i love to shoot, so parts of it i liked, i have always been a good shot, even as a kid, out of the 50 in my platoon only 4 qualified expert, which is the best metal u can get, and i was one of the 4, so i got a weekend pass for the next weekend..
