Is Gulf Seafood Safe to Eat? Feds Say Yes, but Testing is Limited

http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/08/19/is-gulf-seafood-safe-to-eat/

Government scientists told a congressional panel Thursday that seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is now safe to eat, even though no tests have been conducted on fish in the most toxic waters and new tests have not been developed to measure all of the effects of dispersants on fish.

The scientists also said that despite recent claims that most of the oil from the BP spill has disappeared, between 75 percent and 90 percent of the oil remains in the Gulf in some form.

The comments came at a special hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Bill Leher, senior response and restoration scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said Gulf seafood in stores and restaurants is safe to eat, but added that no tests have been conducted on fish in the most contaminated Gulf waters, which remained closed to fishing.

"Every seafood sample from re-opened waters has passed sensory and chemical testing for contamination of oil and dispersant," Leher told Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.). "No unsafe levels of contamination of the seafood has been found."

Donald Kraemer, acting director of the Center for Food Safety at the Food and Drug Administration, agreed. He called the components of the dispersant Corexit, a solvent used to break up oil, "unlikely to present a food safety concern." Kraemer said that while some components of Corexit are considered toxic, fish have not shown a propensity to accumulate the substances in their muscles.

The first note of caution in the hearing came from Paul Anastas, the EPA's witness, who warned that while limited tests have not shown dangerous levels of toxins in fish from dispersants, "the potential longterm effects on aquatic life is still largely unknown."

When Vicki Margolis, another FDA scientists, revealed that the FDA has only conducted tests for the effects of one element of Corexit, Markey seemed shocked.

"You're sitting here as the FDA, representing the public's interest in determining whether or not these fish are safe to eat, it is without having completed the study in terms of these actual chemical components inside the fish, is that right?" Markey asked.

FDA's Kraemer explained that because many of the untested components in the dispersant are commonly found in lip gloss and over-the-counter drugs, the government assumes the danger from ingesting them should be low.

"We believe that the fish coming out of the Gulf do not have levels that are of concern," he said. When pressed by Markey, he said the levels are estimates for a 170 pound man, and not for children, pregnant women or other more vulnerable people.

At several points in the hearing, witnesses from NOAA and the FDA deflected questions to each other. When no witness could tell Markey whether the federal government is monitoring seafood for high levels of heavy metals like mercury, which comes from oil, Markey equated the two agencies to a "regulatory black hole."

The nothing-to-worry-about tone of the first panel changed radically when a second panel of witnesses, made up of scientists and Louisiana fishermen, toldl Markey about their experiences.

Dean Blanchard, the largest dockside shrimp broker in the U.S., said he eats Gulf shrimp most days, but has a hard time convincing some customers at his business in Louisiana that the seafood is safe. "When I try sell seafood, I tell people the government said they did thousands of tests and they say everything is all right," Blanchard said. "And they say, is that the same government that said 1,000 barrels a day was leaking out of the well?"

The vice president of the Louisiana Shrimpers Association, Acy Cooper, said he does not trust the government's statements either, especially claims that most of the oil is out of the Gulf. "NOAA keeps saying the oil's not there," Cooper said. "But we know it's there."

Witnesses also said that BP should not be allowed to pull out of the Gulf based on its assertion that the recovery phase of the disaster is over.

"We understand that the government wants to turn the corner and wants to signal that the Gulf is on its way to recovery," said Lisa Suatoni of the Natural Resources Defense Council. "However the facts simply do not bear that out. There is still a huge amount of oil in the environment."

I had some fish sticks tonight (the frozen ones you buy in a bag) and quite frankly I don't feel very good right now. They tasted like oil. For now on I'm only buying seafood from CA or somewhere off the Atlantic. Screw the Gulf, its fucked. Is Gulf Seafood Safe to Eat? Feds Say Yes, but Testing is Limited 729264

i dont worry since i fry my seafood in 30 wt motor oil anyways, lol,, i simply dont worry about things like i probably chewed on lead paint as a kid, who knows, and i put in my new hot water tank and i used regular solder. the kind with lead, but i dont drink hot water, but we had the old water pipes when i was growing up and im sure they had lead in them. i just dont care..the ppl useing tanning beds are probably at a much worse risk than anything in the gulf.. the gulf is very resilient as i have read. and i think it will be fine... driving is about the most dangerous thing u can do,

Well I disagree, I think the Gulf is ruined. When I was a little boy I drank some oil my dad had on the floor, he was working on our heater, and my mom came in and saw me drinking it. They took me to the hospital and I had to have my stomach pumped. I could have died.

I'm not eating anything that comes out of gulf anymore.

well shrimp is fryed in oil, lol u know im just teasing, but i dont worry about things, i think in a couple or 3 years this all will be old history, but i have said enough,, take care, but i cant eat fish sticks , yuck i eat crappie my son in law catches, here,i remember as a kid fishing for them in i think st johns river,, i was with a friends family staying at their friends in st augustine, but we had to drive a good ways, tell me if i have the right name,,,,,,,, .... now we have a lake system here close , lay lake that u cant eat the fish, ever, because of the i think it was a paper mill. i think the fish have mercury in them, but im not sure but u catch and release, the lake i am on is the cleanest lake in the state, when i was young it was real clear u could see 10 ft deep, but now with nutrients from ppl fertilizing their yard and probably farm run off the lake has got more green, than when i was a kid, when i was a kid i had a collapsible cup in my tackle box box and drank right out of the lake, but its still the best lake in the state, its 300 ft deep, at some places, and 45 ft where i swim .but if u got a jug of water it would be crystal clear, the green is just the lake as a whole, and its not that much,,

Maybe BP will come out with there own brand of seafood sauce, call it "BP Special Recipe".

No, the gulf is ruined, I don't care how much they try to clean it up, they will never get it all enough to stop it from ruining everything. Look elsewhere for goods seafood, I'm looking towards CA (the pacific Ocean) and the Atlantic for now. Eventually in the future if I want fish, I'll have to settle for going fishing in our local lakes, because that all that will be left. The oil companies will eventually destroy all the oceans, is my belief.

Rosco the bottom kill is within 30 ft. but the Feds and BP are concerned about pressure increasing on the sealed part on the floor. They are running more tests to see if the mud and concrete will hold that is in the pipes already.
For years the fishing manuals have carried warnings on consuming fish by children and pregnant women, mercury contamination , now it extends out 7 miles into the gulf, next year it will be farther. This is not caused by oil companies but contamination from farmers and industry along rivers that feed into the gulf.
Tyler if your fish tasted like oil possibly your cooking oil might have turned rancid. fishsticks are usually made from white fish shipped in from overseas.
The biggest concern I am hearing is in the feeding grounds and nesting areas of the seafood. This will be long range to continue testing to see at what percent oil or the other chemicals have been absorbed.

Again, I was only joking about the fish sticks, just trying to make a point, that all oceans will be destroyed by the oil companies, its only a matter of time. If you like the oil companies that's your choice, I do not. They are control freaks that rule this planet.

Fuck them. But I'll be dead before it gets so bad people finally put them out of business. So what the fuck do I care.

We supply 10% of the oil used by the US from the gulf plus employ over 200,000 people plus all the businesses associated with the oil and gas industry. The Deep Water Horizon was the first accident of its nature in the gulf in over 40 years.
If the gulf is to be kept pristine do away with commercial fishing , charter boats , cities built on the beaches and farming that leads to pollution .

Think about that next time you jump in a car and drive somewhere or use a plastic product, shampoo, lip balm, watch grass being mowed and on and on.
we are dependent on petroleum products and by-products.

I hate all oil companies, they are money hungry assholes and will eventually destroy the environment. They don't care, as long as they can control you and how you live and make money. I hate them all.

I am not sadly mistaken, just a realist and totally aware of world wide dependency to petroleum products.

one day we will be able to function without oil but that will be many decades, battery cars and hydrogen cars are many years from being realistic, some battery cars will work for a few pll, but not the masses, plus ppl cant just go out and trade cars,, what will control that is the price of oil not the gulf, without oil the world would come to a standstill, one day, but a long way off, and like has been said none of us will see it, or even our kids, the closest thing to a replacement is coal, we have plenty of that, like 200 years worth or more, but a change cost money. money we dont have, the problem with change is it cost so much for the new products ppl cant afford, like i said as long as ppl can afford oil , oil it will be, but i think we have about oiled out, lol nite, take care, i do think ppl should buy cars that get better millage, i get 30 mpg, but it was for money , nothing noble,

seem everything they build that is fuel efficient is a rolling death trap, I saw a wrecker pick up a small once square looking car, 4 people died in it , there was very little left to even recognize the type of car it was.Give me my gas guzzling truck made of steel not plastic and day.
