Anti-war activists affiliated with the group CODEPINK on Wednesday interrupted former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a speech in Tampa.
“You cannot be compassionate and kill people in the war of choice, the war on Iraq,” Retired Colonel Ann Wright stood up and shouted while Rice was speaking at a ONE/US Global Leadership coalition event. “I’m an Army Colonel, I am a former US diplomat, and these wars of choice that both the Republicans and the Democrats have had are terrible for our national security.”
About a minute later Rae Abileah, the co-director of CODEPINK, stood up and interrupted Rice again.
“The blood of Iraqi children is on your hands,” she shouted. “Thousands of young soldiers my age have lost their lives unnecessarily in a war based on Condoleezza Rice and the Bush administration’s lies. True patriotism does not look like illegal bombing and lying into war that kills innocent civilians.”
Both protesters were escorted out of the building by security personnel.
Interrupting speeches has become the protest of choice for CODEPINK, which was founded in 2002. Members of the activist group have interrupted speeches of members of the Bush and Obama administrations, including former Vice President Dick Cheney and White House counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan.
