We slaughtered 750,000 family pets in one week when war was declared. They thought it was a patriotic thing to do. The Government was instrumental in this massacre of beloved pets. It was considered a mass euthanasia of all non essential animals. The government sanctioned the criminal prosecutions of cat owners for giving their cats a saucer of milk. (Cats are not suppose to drink milk, but people did not know that

really? the government did this? Oh My!
it is sad, whoever did this, simple solution neuter, and spayed.
If the are Ferrel  I can understand, still a cruel act,
people who have pets, need to be up on preventing this.

I know people who live close to my sister in Louisiana,
who put antifreeze out to kill unwanted  animals. still sad, unless it is rats.

The massacre of the nation's pets was in sept 1939...pets were not allowed in public shelters.
People abandon their pets in the vets corridors and offices. At night distressed animals cast out by their owners roamed the blacked-out streets.
5 days of mass destruction followed. A local rendering firm was stacked several feet deep with dog and cat carcasses.

War was nasty ...we had to survive.
London Zoo put down poisonous snakes,Black Widow spiders,6 Indian fruit bats, 9 Crocodiles, 2 American Crocodiles and two lion Cubs and well as others.

We were going to have a food shortage and the domestic animals were very much troubled by the noise of the Bombing ect.

yes war is nasty, some we have to fight, others are  unnecessary,
when it is for riches, for the rich.
I prefer a peaceful solution, in this day and age.

when it is a crazy radical(Hitler)
yes, we have to put them down.

Horses were used in the US for feeding soldiers and many years ago horse meat was given to the poor in food pantry's. Antifreeze now contains different chemicals that are not toxic to pets but the new animal killer is mole bait, it is sweet and attracts roaming pets.

The EPA guidelines now forbid antifreeze to be toxic to animals. This country under gov. rules is barbaric on the slaughter of wild mustangs out west, places such as the ASPCA euthanize millions of animals a year. The killing of coyotes and wolves has become common in residential areas as they search for food, man intruded on the animals space. Pets are a luxury not a necessity .

My mother was the investigator for the local ASPCA for 12 years and I would occasionally accompany her on calls. I won't relate any horror stories here but I've come to the firm belief that pet ownership is bad. Zoos are bad. They in no way "preserve" any species.Circuses  are bad when they exhibit and train animals. SeaWorld imprisons cognitive whales and drive them insane.Labs imprison and torture to death cognitive, emotional, social chimpanzees. The list goes on.

If we employ animals (guard dogs, draft animals, etc.) we should BY LAW be required to care for them and provide for their care upon retirement.

Should we eat them? When we NEED to.

Should we involve them in sports? Sure! Dogs and horses thoroughly enjoy running.

Should we have any animals as "pets"? Never.

??? Never had a cat.

But when I was a freshman,we had a guy named James Walker who was so nutty, his family made him live in their garage. He announced in class that he "accidentally" froze his mama's cat when he left it in the freezer. We always called him "cat killer Walker" after that.

Must have brought him good luck, though. His parents were killed in a plane crash and he inherited the family construction business and all their money.

How do you feel about Alligator wrestling? Cruel, inhumane? I personally think it is and is not necessary. Just because we humans are dominate should not give us license to wrestle something into submission like a circus act when its for recreation purposes only.

meemoon wrote:Should we involve them in sports? Sure! Dogs and horses thoroughly enjoy running.
I think its safe to say dogs and horses enjoy running in the wild, we've all see them do it on their own with no encouragement from anyone or anything, but if they actually enjoy being put in a steel box and shot out of it like a cannon and then whipped to run faster to win the 'race' with a human on their back I seriously doubt that. They don't know a 'race' is taking place, they can't comprehend what that is or that is has a finish line. What the trainers are hoping for is that the horse naturally likes to run in the wild (open pasture) and they can control that same enthusiasm on the track. More often than not the horse eventually runs a race only because he was "trained to do it" and is getting no enjoyment out of it whatsoever. They like to run at their own free will, and will race among themselves for fun or to show who is dominate. The race track takes that element away. I base that on my experiences with horses for years, being around them day in and day out, watching what they do, and competing in rodeo type events and horse shows in western riding competitions, where your horse and you are put through various tasks, such as changing leads on command, side-stepping, reining, back-up, etc. The horse doesn't enjoy that either, what they really want is to be free in a large pasture with other horses, with plenty of grass to graze on and fresh water to drink.

I agree with your theory on horses, but some have never known freedom of open range, we had race horses for years, best cared for animal in the world. I'm sure you have watched races, what happens when a horse looses its jockey ? It doesn't stop, it keeps running with the other horses, no whip making it, this is the nature of the beast . I grew up around rodeos , those horses are no different but when they lose a rider a gate is opened and it knows to go out of it. Now take dogs and cats, once they are placed inside they become as if they were in an institute. They do not hunt for food, nor use their primal instincts, everything is given to them, they lose their identify and become helpless and vulnerable to the wishes of their owner. I despise a circus that is inhumane. Zoos the same thing , it is all about entertainment of man for money, not concern for the well being of animals.

I love my little Schnauzer,he loves us,if we don't adopt these beautiful pets, what happens to them?
I think it is cruel to say we should not have pets,if they are well taken care of. They are a great stress reliever, and entertainment. our little pepper is so smart, and has many tricks, he had rather be in our warm house than out in this freezing cold.  Empathy/Love  is good in all things. whether it be people ,or animals.    The only thing I hate,is hate.

I like your response Tyler, and yours SSC,I also grew up around horses an ran a few barrel races with my  Penny,(mare) she loved the challenge, and would let me know by her nuzzling  my shoulder, and  sniffing at my pockets for apple or carrots, she was a runner though an had to have much control by her rider.

I also have canaries, reef fish and they are thriving in their environment.

Fish I can go along with , they don't have much of a chance in the wild, but birds I just never saw anything humane in keeping them confined in a wire cage with limited space, that is cruel to me, they should fly free as they say exercise their wings. Messy little suckers I was so glad my kids and grands outgrew the bird stage. We had a goldfish Mr. Bubbles every other week gbaby either over fed it or wanted to play with it, I think in all there were 6 replacements none she was ever aware of, finally we let the last one go to the big goldfish heaven in the sky complete with funeral.

My Son bought some stick insects home. They escaped all over his bedroom. I shut the door and left him to deal with them.
They gave me the creeps.

I have seen those Candy, strange looking for sure, my son had a pet turtle and he caught a little green snake so he put it in with the turtle, next day only a few vertebrae of the snake were left, I was relieved I hate snakes with a passion.

A member of our family paid £60 to a Rat Trapper who put out a trap and caught nothing.
Next door neighbour put out a trap and caught the Rat. Custard Pie.

They are feral now, some people moved away down the street and left 4 cats, they have bred with every cat in the neighborhood, my next door neighbor feeds every stray but they end up in my yard so I trap them and relocate them.

What a CAT...astrophe ....

Nicking cats might be called plagiarism. Then again might not...

After your Neighbour has fed them ...Zee Cats might think your backyard is a Toilet.

That they do, my big problem is the animal control, we have a leash law that also covers cats running loose, if it is on your property they assume it is yours and a $325.00 fine can be charged per loose cat, I told them they are strays but they said it is still my problem, if I shoot them I am in trouble so I make night runs and relocate them my way. I hate cats
