Country singer-songwriter Carrie Underwood makes her big-screen debut this Friday in "Soul Surfer," the true story of Bethany Hamilton, the teenager who became a pro surfer after losing her arm to a shark attack.

"It's such an inspirational story," says Underwood, the 2005 "American Idol" winner, who plays the supporting role of a youth counselor to Hamilton (played by AnnaSophia Robb).

The smaller part suits Underwood while she eases into acting. "So many people come from the music world and jump into a starring role, and then get made fun of for it," she told StyleList during interviews for the film in Los Angeles. "I didn't want a movie where the success of it was all on my shoulders."

Underwood looked extremely feminine in a floral-print spring dress and coral heels (which she later switched for the nude, floral-print tiered dress with black heels that she is wearing in the photograph). "There is a departure from your human side and your work side," she said about dressing up for photographers. "When you're at home, you're not wearing heels or your work attire!"

"I try to dress appropriate to the event that I'm going to. The style thing has evolved for me just because I have more options now. Before, it was wherever I found things or if it belonged to one of my friends or sister. I still have hand-me-downs from my sister who is a decade older than me."

The newlywed said she feels a new pressure when picking out her wardrobe. "I just got married (to hockey player Mike Fisher). It hasn't even been a year yet. It influences what I wear because I don't want people assuming I'm pregnant. Now I try to stay away from baggy outfits because I don't want people to think, Oh, she's hiding something. Now I have to think a little extra. We have plenty of time to have kids."

Even though it seems like a fairy-tale existence, Underwood said, "I live the most boring life away from what you see me doing on the stage. I consider myself a normal person that likes to perform. When I'm at home, I'm Carrie the person in sweatpants. When I'm 'Carrie Underwood,' I'm dressed like this."

lmfao!

Carrie got her start in the business by winning American Idol, then she went on to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. They basically drafted her..lol They wanted her in there circles so they made her a member. Its a great honor and she is very proud. Hank Williams was once a member but they fired him. I think he didn't show up sometimes to preform or something so they canned him.. lmao

Her music is a crossover between Country and POP. In other words, she has had hit songs on the country charts and pop charts. Sometimes the same song on both charts. A lot of artist are doing that now, few are successful at it, but Carrie is doing quite well.

I always thought Avril would be a good crossover artist but she strictly stays on the pop charts. She doesn't make country albums. She does however make acoustic recordings where she is only playing an acoustic guitar, and of course singing the song. She has preformed live acoustic sets before just sitting on a stool playing her acoustic guitar and singing. Entire shows like that. That could easily be considered country or folk. She started out singing country and pop songs at her church and local library's before she got signed by a major recording label.

I agree I don't consider Carries music bubble gum either. Pop/country is how she is categorized.

Gypsy probably thinks Carrie has a tiny baby voice.. lol

Well I agree she is not pure country, but that is a good thing. She makes more money appealing to a larger audience. The old school country is still alive but fading somewhat. I like both styles old and new.

Taylor Swift is another new artist that has crossover hits. I like her a lot. Sexy girl and beautiful voice. Carrie Underwood: 'The Style Thing Has Evolved for Me' 822189

i have been to the grand ole opry twice . i have said this i think but the first time was ok had allen jackson that did about 3 songs, and i think mel mcdonnel, not sure of his name, he sang his song " baby has her blue jeans on, but the second time no big names, and i dont like the i guess pure country with like the Whites, or little jimmy, i dont really care for old country , never cared for waylon Jenning or porter waggner or willy nelson,, so i guess i like some old songs but like the newer country better,,i like S twain, and tim macgraw and his wife.i like martina mcbride, i suck with names, lol,

Here is an example of one of Avril's acoustic sets. Tell me this couldn't be a crossover hit. I want to be Avril's manager....lol

i would think this one was a bit more country, it had over 18 million hits, but if u have to sound like randy travis to be county, she will never be that,, but who cares, i just hope she has a happy life as so many country singers hit some personnel hard times..i think she has her head on straight. take care
