A leading Australian National University (ANU) academic says Australia has an obligation to accept a group of Uighur detainees from Guantanamo Bay as refugees.
United States President Barack Obama has asked for the Government's help in resettling the detainees, who are Muslims from north-western China.
It is feared they will face persecution if they return home.
Professor Don Rothwell, from the ANU College of Law, says the group has been held for seven years at Guantanamo, despite being cleared of links to terrorism.
"Australia needs to seriously consider such a request because it is coming from the United States," he said.
"Australia has been actively supporting the United States in its efforts in the global war on terror.
"As an ally of the United States and as a country that may have been a beneficiary of intelligence that's been gained out of the detainees at Guantanamo, I think Australia has a moral responsibility to give this request due consideration."
