I have a cactus that bloomed big blueish, purple blooms this summer,I took a pic, but it didn't show up well. I have looked everywhere for the name of this cactus, it is large barrel shaped, and little cactus forms around the bottom of the Mother cactus. I know you have many types thought you may be able to help me identify it.

We have a cactus in our front yard. Its a young cactus that is only about 20" high. Its supposed to grow to about 6 feet or something. They grow very slow. I'm not sure of the name of ours but there are many types of cactus's. I bought mine online from ebay. I think ours is from the mountains of Peru. It looks like the kind you'd see in Mexico or Texas but it doesn't get as big as those. I didn't want one that will grow 15' in the air, so I got one that won't get that big. I'll probably be 90 years old before it ever reaches its maximum height I think..lol Grows very slow. It came in a box and we planted it immediately. We've had it over 3 years now and I think its grown about 6 inches. But its doing good. Very healthy and strong. cactus's are very strong and can take just about anything.

Your Cactus will live to be 300 years old.
The Latin name of these acient Cacti is "Carnegiea Gigantea"
Can grow to 50ft tall with a 2ft thick trunk. Weighing thousands of Kilograms.
Yours should grow 8" a year.
Protect from excessive cold...it will tolerate 20 F..7C Briefly.
It is not the heaviest or tallest...but most promoted, often used as scenery in movies.
It is HOME to many birds and provides food with it's nectar, pollen and seeds.
Natural habitat is Arizona and Mexico.

Gypsy when transplanting cacti
use a folded pleat like newspaper..wrapped around the plant like a collar. perhaps with a tool to balance it in the right hand.
To lift a pot of cactus use a pair of pliers with the ends bent.
Maybe the Dessert you refer to is the Mohave Dessert... (not sure)

My Cactus isn't known to grow higher than 8 feet. So its a different kind of Cactus than the picture. I was saying it looks like that but doesn't grow as high.Candy Cottingham wrote:Tyler

Like I said that picture is not my Cactus. Take that for what it is. You don't know what kind of Cactus I have, many look alike. I really don't care it it grows 50 feet in the air, but when I bought it, it had a description about it, and its not supposed to get higher than 8 feet. So put that in your pipe and smoke it. lol :)Candy Cottingham wrote:Tyler I look like my Dad but I am not my Dad.
