TV News Ratings: Fox News Remains on Top; CNN Edges MSNBC; CBS' 'Evening News' Has Brutal Quarter

http://www.thewrap.com/media/column-post/tv-news-ratings-fox-news-remains-top-cnn-edges-msnbc-cbs-evening-news-has-brutal-quarter

Published: March 29, 2011 @ 1:09 pm.By Dylan StablefordThe Nielsen ratings for the first quarter are in, and in the cut-throat world of cable news, Fox remains dominant, while CNN -- propelled by coverage of breaking news in Japan and the Middle East -- edged MSNBC in primetime among 25-to-54-year-olds.

On the network side, the "CBS Evening News" experienced its "lowest-rated first quarter among total viewers and adults 25-54 since at least 1992 -- as far back as Nielsen’s records for the program go." This will no doubt fuel even more speculation that Katie Couric is on her way out as its anchor.

Here are the highlights (and lowlights), network-by-network:

FOX

>> For the 37th consecutive quarter, Fox has been the most-watched cable news channel in terms of total viewers.

>> FNC averaged more total viewers for its broadcast day and in primetime than CNN and MSNBC combined.

>> Fox swept the top 12 cable news programs in total viewers, and boasted the top eight programs in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic -- “The O’Reilly Factor” and “Hannity” were the top-two in both categories. (MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" and the combination of Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" and Lawrence O'Donnell's "Last Word" placed 13th and 14th, respectively, followed by "Fox and Friends" at number 15.)

CNN

>> In its (not quite) first quarter on the air, Piers Morgan's 9 p.m. show was CNN's most-watched news program, averaging 933,000 total viewers a night -- and 302,000 25-54-year-olds.

>> Morgan edged Anderson Cooper's 10 p.m. show, which averaged 858,000 total viewers. However, Cooper had more "demo" viewers, averaging 318,000 per night.

>> In March, Cooper's "360" show topped FNC’s "On the Record With Greta Van Susteren" for the first time more than two years.

MSNBC

>> MSNBC, with an average of 454,000 total viewers per day, fell behind CNN (547,000) in that category as well as among 25-54-year-olds (152,000 to CNN's 189,000). But both networks were well behind Fox (1,123,000 total viewers, 291,000 in the "demo").

>> MSNBC held a slight lead on CNN in total primetime viewers (841,000 to CNN's 795,000) but slipped behind among 25-54-year-olds.

CBS

>> The “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric” registed its lowest-rated first quarter among total viewers and 25-54-year-olds since at least 1992.

>> Its 6.43 million total viewers and 1.98 million 25-54-year-old viewers fell just slightly compared to the first three quarters of 2010 -- but that had been its lowest-rated first quarter ever.

NBC

>> “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” held onto the top-rated evening newscast slot for the quarter, though it slipped in both total and 25-54-year-old viewers compared to 2010. (However, as TVNewser pointed out, it's hard to compare 2011 to 2010, when NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics gave Williams' broadcast a bump.)

Gypsy lost that round on News Stations TV popularity. In an effort to prove FOX wasn't rated number 1, she inadvertently brought to our attention that it was. ..

You shot yourself in the foot that time..

Now you are calling the majority of the population dummies because you didn't know FOX was rated number one.. lol!

Yeah, with those stats it shows that a networks television stations and websites popularity percentages are not equally consistent with each other, although they are owned by the same company. We can clearly see that when online, a large enough majority of there audience when given the choice of what to read and see, the numbers decline. Most of them are not online to watch a movie so the website understandably does not do as well in the ratings.

Obviously the networks television stations are reaching a wider audience and they're airing content that the majority of people prefer over there competition. So what does that tell us? It tells us that Foxes TV ratings are largely due to the entertainment and movies they air. In contrast, there audience when given the ability to read with a computer they choose another network. That tells us that foxes good ratings does not necessarily reflect the political views of the majority of viewers or how they would vote. For example, a democrat could be very entertained by watching a tv show with viewpoints that differ than theres. They watch other viewpoints to listen to the other side of the argument.

Ratings for one network news broadcast over another does not reflect the majority of its viewers are republican or democrat All the votes swinging for one political party over another from any particular network is non-existent because they both get good ratings from non-political broadcasts that who's viewers are both democrat and republican.

On the flip-side there website is not doing as well. Lets face it, on the internet you select what you want to read and hear more then you do when watching TV. On television you see a wider range of viewpoints because you are not controlling what you see. You sit down and watch other things your never intended on watching. You watch TV ads while watching a movie during commercial. They have news ads trying to persuade and encourage new viewers. They show them short video clips of important people that are going to be on there show for an interview. They campaign and promote there company by airing sporting events, and press conferences with presidents. They engage in the music industry with shows like American Idol.

They are a networks who's company owners are guided by what makes the most money. However the employees and everybody involved including the owners, try to do a good job. They try to differentiate the 'entertainment news shows' from the regular news announcements. They shows are an open format of conversations and are not to be considered as fact. It is clear they are having a conversation not reciting the news. The 'fact' part of the broadcast is when they have live news reports and do the daily news. They are reading teleprompters that got there information from news feeds around the world. That information is feed into the teleprompter in an organized fashion by editors so the show runs smoothly.

For the traditional news being read from these teleprompters, the news caster is careful to not show they have an opinion or are taking sides on the issues. They want to be professional and leave it up for the viewer to judge and decide without any influence from the news caster.

The owners themselves may not agree with the viewpoint of his employees and does not want anyone giving opinions while reading the news. They save that for the talk shows they have. The "News" specials.

So the bottom line is, lying while telling the news does not benefit the company, there audience spans both political parties, and lying would only discredit them as a news casting company and jeopardize the companies ability to continue good sound business. Creditability goes a long way in big business. News is just one area of there business interests and lying is too risky. Mistakes will happen, but blatant lies are not in there agenda for broadcasting the news. You must understand that the "news shows" are geared towards having good ratings, and having both sides of the fence opinions is critical for that. If favoring a republican discussion gets better ratings then they do more shows with republicans, and they always try to have interesting guests with strong political viewpoints from both sides of the fence.

And that's my view...

When you see a Nielsen rating those are gathered from actual homes not from a poll on the phone, I was part of Nielsen for 2 years. They come in install a box on every tv, connect to every dvd, vhs and game hooked up to the tv. At 3am the box calls in the info to the home computer, this info is what was watched on each tv in a 24 hr. period, or if games or movies were watched. They compensate for the use of your tv every 3 months. They don't care what political side you are on they are just gaining info on show popularity.

I never heard of that but it sounds like a good idea for gathering info. That is also a good way to cut back on your tv bill.

How Gypsy can equate that to communism is beyond me. I guess shes against anything that could possibly show accurate stats. I wonder why that is? I see nothing that even closely resembles communism with that. I'd do it just to cut back my bill some.

Who knows why Gyp does or says anything, mostly I find her negative remarks are due to a huge lack of her ability to understand a subject. The Nielsen deal was in no way interfering with our private lives, they just need stats on tv programs, this is then passed to networks and decisions are made on renewing programs or discontinue their shows. It was a sweet deal to help out with cost.
