i have been alll over florida, from jax. st augustine, down the east coast to miami across the everglades, to naples up to tylers, clearwater, port st joe, panama city seemed we lived in panama city as a kid when on vacations,,, silver springs twice, , cyprus gardens 3 times, toured the cape, and to disney world 3 times, i posted this once, i sure hope those euros that are coming can speek spanish, or they will have a hard time, actually while in disney world and universal studios and seaworld in orlando twice, i heard so many languages, i was amazed. come on and spend ur money. and go visit tyler, lol,, help me spell tyler, weki watchy , twice, is it still there??? when in miami, i have said this, we got there, and was use to panama city as a kid, in miami it is as it is now, tall building i could not see the beach, we stoped even when i was a kid and could not find any gas station that could speak english, my dad saw a police car parked, he pulled up to it. my dad i never heard a cuss word from his mouth, so i will cuss for him , he asked the police officer, to direct him to a highway with a motel to get the hell out of here, so they laughed and told him , the next day we crossed the everglades , on the tamami trail, (spelling)stayed in naples, that was about 45 years ago, i cant imagine the way it is in miami now, but all politicians are fearful of the hispanic vote, one reason we dont have anything to this day to do with cuba,,cuba is here, lol,,,

Yes I've been to all those places you mentioned, I've lived in Florida my entire life and never lived anywhere else. Actually, "weki watchy" is spelled "Weeki Wachee" and its a Springs attraction for those of you that don't know. And "tamami trail" (you almost had it) is spelled "Tamiami Trail" its a scenic highway and one of the largest tropical wildernesses in the continental U.S, in the Florida Everglades.

When we went to Tamiami Trail, I was too little to remember much about it, but its supposed to be cool. I flew down to Miami a few years ago to attend a tennis tournament, and the airport was very nice too I might add with plenty of good food, and yes, lots of Hispanic people. In many areas of Miami, Spanish has become the predominant language, replacing English. Anyone from Latin America could feel at home on the streets, without having to pronounce a single word in English. It's amazing how just a few hundred miles things change so dramatically, becuase the Tampa Bay area does not have nearly as many Hispanic people. Actually, going to Miami was like going to another country. I loved it their and everyone was really nice, The beaches were absolutely gorgeous, and I'd like to go back again sometime. Since I don't speak or understand any other language other than English, I was happy to get back to a predominantly English speaking town. I'm white with all my earlier ancestors (great-great-great grandparents) coming from Europe.

Tyler , I was in Tampa-St Pete area a few years ago , the motel the crew stayed in had a flock of green birds that roosted there every evening, several 100 of them, a little larger than a canary but not as large as a parrot...any clue what they might have been ?

Yeah it might, sounds good to me...lol I don't actually live IN Tampa bay, but I live outside of it in a smaller town. Tampa is the most recognized nearest to where we live.

Are you sure you can't use a few more SSC? The gulls are so bad here they have signs at the hotels saying "please don't feed the Seagulls" we have so many of them. Of course, maybe I could interest you in a Gator or two, I'm sure you'd like one of those, right?

Now you are talkin...I know how to cook one of them..wonder if seagulls are like dove ?? I have never heard of anyone eating gulls seems like they would have a fishy taste . We have gators behind the house but it is more fun watching them , but I am careful to keep the small dogs and kids away from the rivers edge unless I have the rifle down there with me.

Yes you have to be careful of those gators, they are the sharks of the lakes I always say. Once when I was a little boy fishing on the side of a like on summer afternoon, a Gator slowly started getting closer and closer to me while I was sitting there fishing, and I was watching him very closely not moving at all, just watching. He would swim closer then stop and stare at me, and 5 minutes later he would move a little closer. Well my natural instinct finally kicked in and I realized I was being stalled and that I was in great danger. Well I decided the best thing to do was to jump up real fast and startle him so he would be spooked and take off, well when I jumped up he did a back-flip out of the water and went underwater swimming away. That Gator eventually would've taken a run for me had I remained sitting there. It was a close one, I almost became his mid-day snack.

But I've had several encounters with them in the past, and I've seen them follow children and dogs around waiting for one of them to get in the water. Its a dangerous situation around here, and we hear about gator attacks every year.

I hear much more about your area than here, we have a few that wonder thru a residential area coming out of canals but they are rounded up by WL&F and relocated..I have a river bordering my back yard we hear the males in the mating call now a deep bellowing sound, in Oct. when the eggs hatch the females are very dangerous, we have had them bump our boat if we got to close to the nest. Several years ago my husband found a nest and brought home 36 babies, he made a chriping sound and they would pop up to the surface..we turned them lose several months later . It was interesting to watch them eating and swimming in a 500 gal. tank we had in the yard.

did yall see the picture of the gator they killed here, in alabama, i posted it on the pic page i think, it was in an email it also had a pic of a large gator, in weiss lake here it said, it was in shallow water with a full grown stag deer in its mouth,, the gator is hanging by like a big backhoe, 28 ft 1 inch long, i posted it, its not the gator that had the deer, i guess the location is true, i dont knwo much about them in bama or weiss lake, i did not think gators were up this far, adn tyler i was a kid when we crossed the everglades on the trail, and it had air boat rides for i still remember 8 bucks i wanted to stop and ride one so bad, but my dad would not stop, but naples is a nice place atleast back then, except my X's aunt lives there lol.

I saw your pic of the gater..that thing is huge, somewhere in the Daytona -Orlando area is a lake called Lake Jessup, they say there are a million alligators there, I wanted to take an airboat ride there but never got the time on the job to go.

Peace River Canal, Florida - September 29 1977, George Leonard, 52 was attacked and killed by a 7' female alligator while swimming at about 8:30 pm.

Charlotte County, Florida - On July 4th 1988, a 4 year old girl Erin Glover was killed by a 10'7" male alligator as she walked along the shore of Hidden Lake at 6:00 pm.
Martin County, Florida - June 19th 1993, Bradley Weidenhamer a 10 year old male was killed an 11'4" alligator while wading in the Loxahatchee River in Jonathan Dickinson State Park at 6:00 in the evening.
Sumter County, Florida - October 3 1993, 70 year old Grace Eberhart was killed at Lake Serenity. Circumstances of her death are unknown except that she died of a broken neck caused by an alligator bite to the head and neck. Multiple alligators could have been involved in the attack.
Volusia County, Florida - March 21st 1997, 3 year old Adam Binford was killed when he strayed outside of a roped off swimming area at Lake Ashby. His body was recovered the next about 1 mile from the attack site. An 11 foot alligator suspected of the attack was later killed by a trapper.
Sarasota County, Florida - May 4th 2001, 70 year old Samuel Wetmore's body discovered in pond near his home with 8'4" alligator was circling nearby. Mr. Wetmore died of blood loss and trauma.
Polk County, Florida - June 23 2001, 2 year old Alexandria Murphy wondered away from her fenced back yard and was killed by a 6'6" alligator 700 feet from her home on Lake Cannon.
Sanibel, Florida - September 11th 2001, 82 year old Robert Steele was attacked and killed while walking his dog on a trail between two wetland areas in the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. FWC officers later killed a 10'9" and 6' alligator.
Lake County, Florida - June 18th 2003, 12 year old Brian Griffin was attacked while swimming near a boat ramp on the Dead River. The alligator was 10'4" long 339 pounds and was subsequently destroyed along with several other large gators.
Sanibel Island, Florida - June 2004, 54 year old Janie Melsek was attacked and killed by a 12 foot long, 457 pound alligator, while working on landscaping.
Lee County, Florida - 20 year old Michelle Reeves was killed by a 7'11" male alligator when she went swimming after midnight in a retention pond at Lee Memorial Health Park
Lakeland, Florida - March 15th 2005, fishermen discovered the body of 56 year old Don Owen about 12 miles from his home, he had been missing since March 9th. Trappers later caught an 8'9" 300 pound alligator that had Mr. Owens forearm in it's stomach. It was later determined that the alligator had been fed by area residents which is illegal.
Port Charlotte, Florida - July 15 2005, Kevin Albert Murray, 41, was swimming in the Apollo Waterway when a 12-foot alligator attacked and killed him.
Sunrise Florida - May 10, 2006 Yovy Suarez Jimenez, 28, went out for an evening jog and was last seen dangling her feet over the water of a canal near her home. Her partially consumed body was found in the canal the following morning.

Alligator attacks can kill your child

Alligators are living dinosaurs that can be found in warm, wet areas of Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida. You can come into contact with alligators if you:

Live in an alligator-prone area, or
Travel to an alligator-prone area on a family trip or a vacation. For example, if you go to Florida on vacation, be aware that Florida has over one million alligators.
The problem with alligators is that they are killing machines and they cannot be tamed. An alligator is as "wild" as a wild animal gets. A typical adult male alligator is 10 or 11 feet long and weighs about 600 pounds. Yet its brain weighs less than 10 grams -- it is about the size of a grape. Alligators are driven strictly by instinct.
Instinct tells a hungry alligator to kill and eat any living thing that moves. Alligators eat fish, turtles, frogs, birds and small or large mammals. Your child is a small mammal. Here is a typical scenario:

An alligator is living in a pond.
It lurks in the shadows along the pond's edge waiting for anything edible to come along. When it is lurking, an alligator will sit motionless with just its head an nostrils above the water, like this:


An alligator can remain motionless and alert in this position for hours and is invisible in the shadows.

If a child happens to wander down to the water's edge, the alligator will strike with amazing speed. An alligator's jaws are huge and can exert 2,000 PSI of force.
The alligator will drag the child to the bottom of the pond and drown the child.
The alligator will then bring the child to the surface to eat the child.

If you live in an alligator-prone area or travel to a state like Florida on vacation, you need to be very conscious of alligators. In general, you never want your child to be near the water's edge or in the water in an area where there are alligators. Even with adult supervision, if a 600 pound alligator latches onto your child, there is very little an adult can do. You should be conscious of the alligator problem in any unfenced area near water (pond, lake, river, irrigation canal) in an alligator-prone area.
